Half of what the v8 does? I doubt it but to each his own i guess, why make the srt if the diesel is so fast then? Oh and what does a gallon of diesel cost in europe? (Almost 4 litres 3.78l) probably double what gasoline costs....i think this thread has lost its way, like its been said before everyone buys what they need and want, when we want to go fast we buy srt's or other big v8's , when we need to tow we buy diesels, in europe everyone drives diesels its the best thing since sliced bread over there...title of this thread "is the diesel really worth it" thats something each of us need to decide for ourselves, after we figure out what we are using this car for....

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

i guess you dont really like to know what we have to pay here

diesel is about EUR 1,40 per liter ... so EUR 5,30 per gallon = approx USD 6,90
gas is about EUR 1,55 per liter ... so EUR 5,90 per gallon = approx USD 7,60

be happy with your gas pricing over ther

but right, in the end has everyone to do his or her own decision.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

The thing is, in the us you may use the car for a very few miles for hard accelaration and/ or top speed, in germany you can go 400 miles on the autobahn with an average speed of 120mph (..or more, if car permits) sometimes.
My comparable diesel suv consumes at that speed 10,5 to 11 liters/ 100 km, the V8 or Srt would probably use as double as much.
As well diesel fuel is here about 10 USct/ quart chaeaper than gasoline.
...so for that kind of here commonly practised long distance high speed fun a diesel is quite a thoughtful choice, thus in the US its different.
However, you also can get addicted to the torque a diesel provides compared to a gas engine.

@ sunshine: Give the information of the pricing of he car as well, so white 6.4 will be even happier

Happy day

Achim

Have you adjusted for US gallon being 20% less than UK/ Euro gallon? !

In Italy :
Diesel : EUR 1,70 per liter = EUR 6,43 per US gallon = $ 8,36 per gallon
Gas: 1,75 per liter = EUR 7,00 per US gallon = $ 9,1 per gallon

this is one of the few reasons why we buy all diesel

If that was the case here I would be all over diesel even with 5K premium. Here in the US the numbers for gas/diesel are reversed.

For people in the US ... if you are buying diesel for fuel economy, stop ... buy V6. Although if money wasn't an issue I would buy diesel - just more fun to drive!

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Well.. since I first started pricing out the diesel, the Winter fuel issue on diesel has come and gone.

Now diesel (in my area) is running at the same price as Mid-Grade Unleaded.

Makes my decision waaaaay easier.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Hi All,

I'm based in the UK & looking to purchase a WK2 3.0CRD in the UK in the next week, although the MPG on the Jeep is scaring me a little (OK, so I'm currently running a Mini Cooper.... :-) ).

Here in the UK, Petrol(gas) is £1.37/litre ($2.12) and Diesel is £1.40 ($2.17). However ,we also pay an annual road tax on our cars which is based on CO2 emissions - this is one big reason why US cars don't sell over here (as well as the second factor that they can't go round corners !). Currently my Mini costs me $150 per year for Annual road Tax, the WK2 CRD will cost me $418 per year and the Hemi would cost $737 per year. This, combined with the Gas mileage on the vehicles and the massive difference in price over the CRD to the Hemi, means that for the first time I have to now consider a vehicle powered by the "fuel of the devil". Coupled with this, the Hemi depreciates like a rock falling off a cliff over here (after 1 year & 7500 miles, it loses $37000 in value in the first year - 40% of its value) so nobody, including the dealers, will touch them and reselling is nearly impossible.

A quick question to those running the 3.0CRD - what are you obtaining as MPG (imperial) for the 3.0CRD on average? The figures quoted in the UK spec is 34mpg "combined" (imperial mpg) but I think these are overstated. I'm seeing reports of average mpg around 26.0, is this about right? What is the MPG around town & cruising (75mph/120kmh) ?

thanks all

Dave
