Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

The EPA's proposed emission rules might make the spread between regular petrol and diesel a little closer. EPA taking aim at auto emissions, sulfur in gas

The new elio car's second greatest claim to fame is that it can go 672 miles on a tank. Hello! Ever hear of the Grand Cherokee CRD?

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

OK, so I picked up my new 3.0 CRD Overland last Friday (2013 MY) & have been playing with it all weekend. It's my FIRST EVER diesel (I have previously subscribed to the "fuel of the devil" argument.....) and I have a V8 Cobra sitting in the garage waiting for some sunshine to arrive so I wasn't expecting much from it.
But I have to say, I am really quite impressed with the diesel. No, honestly. I know it's a bit like coming out of the closet, but it's quiet (I know ! A diesel ! and it's quiet !! WTF ??), got loads of torque & power when you need it, smooth acceleration, and not bad mileage to boot (about 18-20MPG (UK) in heavy town traffic, 34-38MPG on the motorway, average for last 200 miles was 26 MPG all types) - and no spark plugs to change! I think I may be converting to the advantages of the diesel lobby. Resale values of diesels in the UK are also typically 20-30% higher than those of petrol/gas too, they also tend to last much longer than petrol engines over here.
For those of you thinking of looking at the diesel in the US, who are unsure and are used to your "loads of grunt" petrol V6s/V8s, then I would say take a closer look based on my experience this weekend - and trust me, I am a real petrol-head. Obviously you will need to work out running costs/resale values on the lifetime of the vehicle, but I would definitely recommend at least trying one.

cheers

Dave

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Just joined the group due to my interest in a 14 GC. I am normally NOT an SUV person, but drove a 14 Overland Summit 5.7. I was impressed with the vehicle, but would only be interested if I like the diesel due to the need for better mileage. I drive approx 25K mi/year.

With that said, I currently own an 11 BMW 335d. My previous car was an 08 335i. After owning both, I can honestly say the diesel version is as fast if not faster than the gas version. While only having 265 hp in the diesel vs 300 in the gasser, the 425 ft/lb of torque in the "d" makes all the difference in real world driving. No comparison. Overall Gas mileage in the 335i was 24.5 mpg for 85K miles. In the d, I am averaging 33.5 mpg with 53K on the clock.

I am looking forward to driving the diesel version of the GC.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Never mind the fuel mileage, you'll love to drive it for the same reason you liked the Beamer diesel.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

One thing you may want to consider - word is that Jeep may only produce enough diesels for sold orders here at first. You could be waiting awhile for the availability to order one after this initial run. I would imagine they would produce some for each dealer to have on the lot as well but that might not be until down the road a ways.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

I'm about a year away from being a serious buyer. However, I hope Jeep doesn't limit availability. Jeep has the opportunity (IMHO) to take some sales away from BMW/Mercedes. Jeep has done an excellent job w/ interior and drive feel. However, customers like me who drive a lot of miles, also want good mileage. The V6 doesn't have enough power for me, and the V8 consumes too much fuel for the miles I drive. Diesel provides both low end torque, towing power, and good mpg. There are a lot of BMW X5d's around and the F13 X5d (2014 model) is about to be introduced. A used E70 X5d with sport package & low miles will be a very reasonable buy in a year. MUCH cheaper than a new GC.

I am willing to switch to a Jeep. Finally, an american company has made an SUV that has great styling, interior and driving dynamics. Just don't over price it, and make it available. There are a lot of options now in the diesel SUV category, including BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW and Porsche to name a few. All have been on the market ahead of Jeep and have good used examples available.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

I grew up with at least one diesel vehicle in the household at all time and that only changed when I got married. Diesel prices, in the US, vary from state to state, county to county even city to city. Currently, diesel is running about the same with regular gas in my neck of the woods. I live in a rural area so my driving is really highway driving (when the nearest fast food joint is still 6 to 7 miles away and grocery store is about 11 to 12 miles). However, we also needed a tow vehicle in addition to my every day driver and I couldn't justify the mpg on the V8. When my husband mentioned the CRD, I was sold. He gets his tow vehicle, I get a decent gas mileage everyday vehicle with all the bells and whistles that looks great. I don't mind paying extra for that. A win win in my book. So I wait until it can be mine.

Er - could you explain what this means? What is a 'sold order'?
