Used to be other manufacturers copied VW... Apparently not anymore. The resemblance to the 11-13 GC from the a pillar back is undeniable on that concept.

Yes it is worth it

One must remember that the initial desiging process for the WK grand cherokee was under taken when jeep was owned by Mercedes and floor plan based on ML range

Not impressed! The quoted range is 661 miles. The 3L CRD does that. As for "plug-in", the places I go have trees or sand, no power points.

As for reliability, diesels last forever. Ask any mechanic. OK the older Merc diesels in Jeeps had some issues mainly due to lack of knowledge on the part of maintainers but this is a new generation VM Motori diesel. A new kid on the block... Hardly, VM Motori have been making diesels since 1947.
in Australia, maybe. Not here in the US. Mechanics can barely fix a gas engine let alone a diesel. If Jeep sends technicians from each dealer to training for a few months it may help, they just don't see enough diesel's to know them like a gas motor here. And the diesel's they do see are all Cummings motors which have absolutely nothing in common with the VM. I can picture the diesel Jeep's just sitting in the service area for months waiting for someone who actually knows something about them to fix it if it breaks.

and the Hemi is not slower than the diesel. The low end torque has your butt dyno all kinds of messed up. My wife and I are lookign at new cars and test drove an Explorer sport. She said the Jeep felt faster from a stop. I had to explain this same concept, the Jeep feels faster because of the low end torque. That Explorer would destroy my Hemi in a race, it wouldn't even be close. But it doesn't feel as fast behind the wheel because it takes a second or two for the turbos to spool up on the v6.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

until we get real pricing, it'll be difficult to tell, I could see the diesel being a significant premium, even over the Hemi. manufacturers aren't dumb they will price it at the regular 5 - 6 year pay off as that's what the market expects.

Reliability of diesel is great, but as with other turbo driven cars, we will have to look after them.

They making an explorer svt now ? If not there is no way in hell it would beat the hemi in a race...unless you are talking about a race from LA to NY in which case the added fuel stops for the hemi would give the exploder the advantage...

Is that because it is more economical? I dunno, if I needed a SUV, and needed good gas mileage the last thing I would want is a $50,000 Summit with a $2000 up Charge engine option. The wiser choice would be a base Laredo with a V6, 8 speed. My estimate, $15,000 cheaper. If so that pays for a lot of fuel.

the explorer sport has the SHO engine 365hp 350 ft. lbs. and yes, it is a LOT faster than our Hemi's.

I agree, if overall cost is the main factor. But many of us want all the luxury features but also want to save on gas. So, I can only speak from a Canadian perspective where diesel can be the cheapest form of fuel.
I suspect if diesel were the cheapest form of fuel in the US, we wouldn't be discussing this.

^ Exactly ...if the diesel engines of the 80's had the reliability and quiet power of today the Hemi would have never been brought back from the grave.

If you're waiting on VW to bring ANYTHING interesting or innovative over here, good luck! Folks have been waiting on the TDI Tiguan, the TDI Amarok truck....not to mention the 65-70 mpg smaller TDI's they put in Polo's and such in Europe. VW is just like that gal in Jr High...all tease, no action....

Love the concept... it's best of all worlds there... barring what off road capability it may or may not have... BUT it is a concept car and no idea when it might actually show up on our shores.
