Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Many posters seem to conclude a diesel is or is not cost beneficial without playing accountant. The fuel cost difference is a good place to start. I suggest adding maintenance cost differences as well.

It makes a difference if comparing the CRD to the Pentastar or the Hemi. I'm not sure about the Pentastar, because I probably wouldn't seriously consider it. Compared to the Hemi it looks like the CRD gets about 50% better fuel economy and the price of diesel is about 5-10% more than the price of midgrade (Chrysler recommended in the Hemi). Run your numbers with your average mileage and you'll get a starting point.

Many posters in other forums comparing maintenance of the CRD to the Hemi conclude the Hemi maintenance costs are about 1.5 times the CRD costs. (One poster has both a Hemi and a CRD for both he and his wife; a good candidate to comment.)

In the 2014, for someone considering the Ltd with the Lux II Pack, there's a package price advantage in this situation with the CRD. This will reduce the CRD cost and make the CRD more financially appealing.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

With the CRD there are no spark plugs to change and no HT leads to worry about. However, with the DPF and all, the oil has to be an ultra low ash oil like Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 and that's expensive. The lowest price we can get it for is $13AUD/litre (~1 US quart) and it takes about 8.1 litres (8.6 US quarts) per oil change. Anyway, IMHO this is all nit picking when one considers the initial capital outlay. Performance and feel is all that matters. The hemi has a slight edge on performance but the CRD has it all on feel plus way better fuel frugality.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Here in Italy maintenance of diesel engines is much more expensive than gas engines. I don't undestand why but probably for the complicance of DPF, as BobT write. And this DPF is the reason for a lot of problems when using diesel cars in town and with short run (not only for Jeep cars).
My first service (and last) service at 12.000 km in local dealer cost me 600 euro, including 10 liters of engine oil (this is another think I don't undestand....my engine guide says that the engine oil is about 9.5 lt, not 8.5 as I read in this forum !!!)

Sorry for my english!

Dude, your English is one helluva lot better than my Italian! I think the price for the required oil here in the States is a lot lower than the Ozzy guys are seeing and also lower than you are seeing... 600 euros is one big chunk of change for a service call.

Thanks. I know I'm going to have to wait until I can drive them both, hopefully back to back over the same route.

I am leaning towards the CRD, but people are cautioning me against getting a diesel if almost all trips will be about 10 miles. I'm not sure the diesel temps will get where they need to be in 10 miles.

Anyone have any thoughts about whether such short trips (10 miles to work; 10 miles back home) are not good for diesels?

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

The problems with short trip come up with modern diesel engine that have DPF filter and need a "regeneration" every 300-500 km.
The problem is not to do short trips, but not to have some long trips for a long time. For example I drive every day with short trips of 4 km for a total of 15-20 km avery day. But I go out of the city in week-end and in this long trips the regeneration can be done more easly.
The problem comes if regeneration is needed (DPF is almost full) but engine is not in temperature to do it; and even if regeneration starts and you stop the engine when is not completed... this may cause some diesel fuel mixes with engine oil (so I was told) causing degenerating of oil lubrificating properties.
2014 diesel WK2 will use UREA that can help regeneration at a lower temperature and this can help in short trips.

Here in brisbane Queensland Australia i have been quoted $600.00 for a fairly simple 10,000k service on the crd.

No wonder most do their own servicing

Find a new service dealer!, even in Darwin with only one dealer to choose from the 10,000km service was $420, also have a look on the Australian mopar web site they have free oil filter vouchers you can print off

With a rebilt engine one would need 9.5 L to fill it from dry. When changing the oil, a lot of oil remains around the engine, in the oil ducts, oil cooler, oil pump, on horizontal surfaces and paricularly the oil filter if it isn't changes at the same time. See ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD
