It is clear... I paid more than 1 liter of oil to the dealer as a gift
And not only this

Heres my real life experience with diesel engines espescielly the new ones....i had a 2006 dodge ram 3500 with the diesel engine, before the dpf and egr systems of today i was averaging 15 mpg in the city and 22-25 on the highway in factory form, when i installed 35 inch tires and lift kit it brought it down to 13 and 21-23 highway. Last september i purchased a new 3500 and am now averaging 9-10 in the city and the best i ever got on the highway was 14-15 mpg. It is completely stock. The only reason i am keepin it is because i tow my 32' race car trailer with it and i have a farm up north in wisconsin with horses and horse trailer etc. If you do not need to tow or drive long distances i would not buy the diesel. I also own a fleet of semi trucks, our older tractors (pre egr) get 7-8 mpg and our newer ones get 5-6. The engines run alot hotter because of the egrs weve had to overhaul engines after 3 years because of piston rings actually hardening and scratching grooves in the cylinder walls. Overhauls with non egr engines 1 million miles the new engines 350-400k miles, hope this helps in your decision...

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

I agre with White64 when he says than if you don't need towing or if you don't drive long distances the diesel engine is not required.
It is true that new diesel engine are much more complicated due to the EGR valve and DPF filter; for this reason diesel engines need a more expensive maintenance. On the other side the modern diesel engines are much more economical in fuel consumption agaist the gasoline engines.
Here in Europe we all wish to have a gas engine like the Hemi V8 but due to taxes, fuel cost and worst MPG, this gas engine became prohibitive far as... so we buy much more diesel engines (in Italy 1 liter of gasoline cost us 1.85 euros (more than $ 2.3) against the $1 per liter ($3.8-4 per gallon) of fuel in USA).
However I am enthusiastic of my diesel 3.0L V6 diesel engine

The best thing is those who are stuck in the 18th century and petrol motors
Just keep buying petrol no issue

You will never know what you are missing

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

The USA guys seem to be hung up on the CRD only good for towing, long distance driving or fuel economy.
The CRD motor is also a great all round motor. I believe it is the best choice of motor, as it is the best motor in the range.

I really think it is a matter of personal preference and not people being stuck in the "18th century". I own a diesel dodge ram and its great for pulling my race car trailer around, and my horse trailer, and Ill be honest with you the fuel economy is horrible! but sometimes Id like to go fast, so I ordered a Srt, which has a "petrol" engine, and no diesel sold here in the US can keep up with it. The point is, there are cars for "every occasion" and every person wants something different, maybe if you would drive a 900hp petrol mustang down a 1/4 mile dragstrip, youd see what youve been missing, life would be boring if the only engine option we had was a diesel....

Will the US spec diesel be ok if I put Fosters in the piss tank?

(The sad fact is that stuff is actually brewed right here in my home town...)

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

New to this forum but not new to diesels. I sold my Ford Super Duty a few months ago after owning it for just less than 10 years (99 model). I averaged 18 mpg which I think is excellent for a 7000 pound truck. 2WD automatic and I used it to pull my sailboat until I sold it.
My friends F-250's averaged around 12-14 mpg over the same route.
When I bought mine in 2003 diesel fuel was selling for $1.50 and some places I bought it for $1.00 a gallon. When I sold it I was paying $3.79.

I am interested in the diesel JGC because I am a diesel guy and not interested in a Hemi. I know even with EGT and the after burning system for particulate that it will get better fuel mileage than any gas engine will.

I think Chrysler has a heck of a V-6 however as I drove a new Durago 800 miles at a fairly hard 75-80 mph and got an honest 25 mpg which for that kind of vehicle is great. If the JGC uses that same engine which I suspect it does I bet 25 mpg is a reasonable mileage on the interstate..

I appreciate the inputs from long time JGC members.

I wonder if the diesel sells poorly if Chrysler will do what BMW did and discount the cost of the vehicle a huge amount. They are betting on the US desiring the diesel at least some of us.

Speeding defence:
Officer, "Are you aware you broke the speed limit back there?"
Driver, "Yes Officer! I had to drive fast to regenerate the DPF because of my deep concern for the environment."

I think you may be right. Which is why I want to test drive one. However, as someone who may only be able to run highway speeds every 600 miles or so, I'm not sure my driving is a candidate for regeneration. I'm afraid my driving isn't appropriate for the CRD.

I'm not sure that it's being hung up on those things. But without the need for those strengths, $4500 is a big pill to swallow.

I chose the Hemi just because I never had one, and this could be my last opportunity to buy one. The electric 2016 Grand Cherokees with their natural gas generators just won't be the same.
