Is the diesel really worth it????

Unless you're towing something really heavy or doing some hardcore offroading and need that 400 ft lbs of torque.....is the diesel really worth it? Based on highway mileage.........the V6 is rated at 25mpg with the new 8 speed. Based on 15,000 miles a year at 25mpg, and a current price of $3.45/gallon, fuel cost would be $2070 annually. The diesel is rated at 30mpg highway. Based on the same 15,000 miles at 30mpg, and a current price of $4.00/gallon, annual fuel costs will be $2000. No savings there.

I'm willing to bet that the diesel will be a $2500 option, at least. Maybe it will be 3 grand extra. Add in higher maintenance costs for the diesel, more sales tax, more property tax (very high in RI), possibly higher insurance costs because of it being a more expensive engine to replace........

For me, personally, it wouldn't be worth it.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Don't forget that it's only available on limited, overland, or summit models. So if someone needs a SUV with good gas mileage. This wouldn't be a great choice.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

There are a few positive reasons to get a diesel.
1. Exhaust emissions are now cleaner than gas engines (urea based exhaust filter).
2. Torque for towing.
3. Mileage
4. Here in Canada, diesel fuel is priced cheaper than regular gas in the summer and midway between regular and premium in the winter.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Just to clarify, and maybe add fuel to the fire, the 4x2 is rated at 30mpg highway. The 4x4 is rated at 28mpg highway compared to 25 for the Pentastar.

Why wouldn't owners of Limited, Overland, and Summits not want good mileage too? Here in Canada, luxury SUVs that are available with diesel engines out sell there gasoline counterparts by 2:1.

1. Emissions may be cleaner but I'm not willing to pay thousands more so I can say that I'm emitting fewer emissions. I'll let the movie stars in Hollywood take care of that....you know...the one's that drive around in a Prius for the paparazzi and then fly off in their private jets, burnig through hundreds of gallons of jet fuel...don't get me started.....

2. Yes, if you need to tow a big boat, camper, etc.....the diesel may be an option you need, if you don't want to get the Hemi.

3. Better gas mileage yes.......but at what cost...that's the point.

4. Here in New England, diesel costs more than premium fuel.

I think you're missing the point. Everyone wants good mileage. But there is no real savings. The diesel will cost more......here in the US, at least my part of the US, diesel fuel is more expensive. If I get better mileage but pay more for it, what's the use?

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

If I should pick the diesel after all (which is very unlikely), it would be because it is something "special" and not an ordinary engine.

Economically, however, there is no advantage.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Random points...

-For short trips and low yearly mileage, no. You won't break even.
-Diesels typically get better than EPA ratings.
-The Jettas and Passats are pushing 50mpg when rated at 43mpg or less*
-Maintenance is a wash as the gas engines require about the same, if not more frequent maintenance (most of the diesels I see have longer intervals on Oil Changes). Diesels often require less, but more costly maintenance.
-Diesels are more picky about maintenance. Skip an Oil change or three and things can go south in a not so pleasant grindy way.
-Keep a diesel maintained and this thing will outlast you (probably not the vehicle body though).
-As an alternative to the V6, most people will probably pick the V6.
-As an alternative to the V8, many, if not most, will pick the CRD (Same towing, more torque, and the city mpg starts at where the Hemi's highway numbers end).
-Pricing I suspect will be in the same ballpark as the Hemi option +20% or so (my educated guess...).

This thing is going to be a "highway hauler" (trips > 30 miles) versus a mall crawler (<10 miles or less).

*Not sure how the SUV and weight factors into this. The Aussies with the 3.0 TDI and the 5 speed have been reporting 27-30mpg. Add in a 5-10% bump the 8 speed appears to offer and you are at 28-33mpg.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

The biggest failure for diesel popularity in the US compared to the rest of the world is the high cost of diesel fuel. For that reason alone, diesel will never be "worth it" in the US.
Cheaper diesel fuel here in Canada makes them more attractive. If I do get a 2014 it would only be for the diesel option.

Diesel in America 10 years ago was over a dollar per gallon cheaper. It did not take a huge increase until the "global warming" hoax began being pushed as man made and the eco loons began the crusade for ethanol ... It will be cheaper again once people wake up and realize its stupid to use food for fuel for something that doesn't bleed when cut.

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

I'm not so sure about that one. Not everybody looking at the V8 is aiming for torque or towing. Although the CRD has more torque, the HEMI is still the quicker of the two..
