Keep in mind the WK2 does not use a Mercedes diesel, but instead uses a VM Motori diesel, which is newer and more efficient. In fact, I believe it is actually cleaner burning than the Pentastar.

It is already available in Australia, etc. so we KNOW its fuel economy numbers are averaging out around 26mpg with the current transmission. If Jeep puts the eight speed in, your numbers will creep up to around 28mpg.

I agree it is better. With a heavy foot and lift my 2008 Merc CRD gets about 17-18mpg for everyday driving. On the highway if I maintain a steady 60-65 mph maybe I'll get 22-24mpg. It drops a lot when doing 75-80mph. The new tranny should help with that.
I think They need to try to keep the price competitive with gas this time if they want diesels to succeed. I assume the VM Motori is less than the Merc was/is?

Re: It's On For 2013

Don't know if this was posted yet but this was in the SEC filing on 3/8/12

"Starting in 2013, we plan to sell a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee that utilizes Fiat engine technology in the U.S. and Canada"

"As far as alternative fuels, in early 2013, we will be introducing a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a diesel engine in North America. We expect this version of one
our best-selling vehicles to provide significantly improved fuel economy. Together with Fiat, we are also exploring the potential for vehicles that would
utilize compressed natural gas and other alternative fuel sources. In 2012, we plan to launch a bi-fuel version of the Ram 2500 for commercial fleet
applications, which will be capable of utilizing either compressed natural gas or ordinary gasoline."

Still no confirmation, but lastest speculation is that the diesel *maybe* available Q1 2013, but may get delayed to MY 2014 (fall 2013).

Re: It's On For 2013

In my opinion, it isn't about the extra $ it costs for the Diesel option, savings of $ over a long period of time, or the higher cost of diesel at the pump..

... it's all about convenience of range, and drivability.

Being able to drive on a tank for 600 miles... 700 miles... way more valuable than the supposed 'savings' with the diesel. Who cares about the savings from having a diesel over a period of YEARS, or the higher cost option of the diesel motor... being able to drive 700 miles is ABSOLUTELY worth it.

Can't find a pump? Who cares, you're getting such good mileage out of the motor you'd be able to drive another 35 hours looking for a pump. Got a V8? Tough shit, soon as you make a u-turn you have to call AAA.

I'm waiting for the CRD Jeep, then I will POUNCE ON IT and get me one!

Does anyone know the tow ratings for the CRD as opposed to the 5000, and 7400 of the V6/V8?

Gonna need it to tow a track car..and I imagine the CRD will kick ass at it.

Weird, your name strikes my memory... any chance you drove a S52 M coupe? I periodically post on BFc, still have my 99 M coupe.

Back on topic towing with CRD according to Australia's Jeep site is the same as the Hemi V8. I think about 7000 lbs +/- 200 so plenty of room for a race car plus trailerX.

I like to get a CRD with Altitude package - probably in storm troooper guise - supposedly order books open in early June for September delivery.

Order books in June WILL NOT include the diesel option. Rumors have the earliest availability of diesel (delivery) in late Q1 2013. Possibly as late as MY2014 (Q3 2013).

The earliest I would plan on being in a CRD is March 2013.
