2010 diesel sales doubled in US and more models are coming. It seems crazy that Chrysler can't follow this trend.

Trust me, if they wanted to produce that engine to meet costs and specs they could. Chrysler saying they can't do it is total BS.

Agreed. If the CRD badged versions are registered and driving on US roads, doesn't that suggest they already meet US emissions requirements?

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

Apparently there are new regulations for emission that need to be met.
But, for a manufacturer like Chrysler to say they can't meet them, or its too expensive to produce to meet them is just a cop out.
Yes it may cost a few bucks more to produce that engine to meet the new emissions standards... and most people are will to pay a couple extra grand for that engine.
Give the people the choice.

BMW does it and its a great engine. From bmw.ca....
2011 X5 5.0L V8 = 74,300
2011 X5 3.5d V6 = 62,800
2011 X5 3.5L V6 = 59,990

The diesel priced a few grand more than the petrol V6, I would pay that premium for a diesel WK2.

Nice article thanks,
It is great to see diesel is starting to take off.

In 2008 when I got my Grand Cherokee CRD & very few others did it was only a 45 state legal vehicle.
Perhaps those additional 5 states are that important to the numbers. Ca alone has a lot of people.

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

For Mercedes the diesel versions are the entry level. Prices for the gas engines go up from there.

The fuel economy alone in these new diesels should be reason enough to bring it here. Also, in my experience with the BMW X5 35d and Mercedes GL350 Bluetec, actual mileage observed is better than the EPA listings. It seems the opposite is often true of the gas engines.

I still hold out hope that it is coming. Seeing them on public roads in the US can't be a bad sign...

No thanks! Just the stench of diesel burning kills me. I've been to several diesel loving countries and can't stand the smell, and it's worse at elevation.

The bigger problem is that I've seen it offered for around 50 cents MORE per gallon than 87 gas. Do some math and see how much more you'll "save" on MPG at higher fill-up rates. The other problem is that not every gas station has diesel. Plan those journeys carefully!

In the week I had a BMW X5 35d loaner I can't say I smelled the diesel fumes once. Aside from the fantastic mileage, range and torque, the only thing telling me it was a diesel was the sound and response of the engine. Have you driven one of the new diesels?
As for availability, maybe it depends on what part of the country you are in but that is not much of a concern where I drive. The X5 also had a feature in the GPS system that showed every gas station with diesel if you are in an unfamiliar area. Don't forget with all that added range, you don't need to fill up nearly as often either! Even with the upcharge for diesel, you are still ahead- especially when compared to the V8 which is what I would be going for.

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

What smell? It's the 21st century, not 1985, and in-cabin diesel smell is now pretty much as rare as gasoline smell. Of course, if you have a special dislike for diesel odors, you'd be mighty unhappy when refilling.

Relative cost is a major factor, as you say. However, that is thanks in large part to an outdated federal tax structure which treats diesel highway fuel as being exclusively for commercial big rigs. In Western Europe, where they are serious about encouraging better mileage, diesel is comparable to and even cheaper than gasoline.

IMO, Washington will never change this tax inequity, nor will it tweak the overdone diesel emissions regs. The Powers That Be simply want us to go electric whether we like it or not.

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

When I was ready to buy it came down to the 2011 VW Touareg with the TDI and the JGC. Would have purchased the VW as I liked it better, but I keep my cars a long time and was scared thinking about owning an 11 year old VW with 200,000+ miles.

The Jeep was 10k cheaper. I did some math and figured the 10k is what I'll pay extra for gas with the Hemi over the life of the vehicle. So it was pay the 10k up front, or pay the 10k over the life of the car.
