Please stop bringing gas consumption up. The addition of a diesel will add more weight, option and maintenance cost and the price of fuel will be higher. Availability of pumps will also be an issue in the NA market. These are the reasons car makers don't do it. Keep the diesels on the real towing pick-ups. I you don't like having half a car then I don't blame you.

Mileage ALWAYS matters. It's part of the continuing costs of ownership. Yes, diesel costs more in the US and availability can be uneven (although it is becoming more and more available), but that is a matter for the calculators- is it worthwhile? Right now, in my area, diesel has a 10% price premium over regular gasoline. If you're comparing against the Hemi, remember that the Hemi uses midgrade, which is more expensive. It comes down to the extra cost of the engine, and if it's reasonable, you're talking no less capability with a decent amount less cost at the pump.

If you can get the same capability for a lower cost to drive, why not? Just because you chose to purchase a $40,000 vehicle doesn't mean money is irrelevant. Just because we're talking a 2.5 ton vehicle doesn't mean efficiency is irrelevant.

Quarter mile times are 14.8 for the 328i, 13.5 for the 335i, and 14.2 for the 335d. You can see, its power that determines acceleration at the end of the day.
What happened to the diesel and the 125 lb-ft torque advantage? I thought torque won races?! After all, we are talking passenger cars here and not racing trucks.

I guess that torque should be left for the tractor pulling crowd...yee haw!

Stupid
Useless
Vehicle

Just a catchy acronym for a lifted station wagon that used to be able to traverse some dirt.

There ate two versions, the 190hp and the 240hp variants. The shiny 28mpg everyone is excited about comes from the smaller engine.

The bottom line is that for a 5000 pound SUV, the diesel is a fantastic option but probably not attractive to knuckle draggin' mouthbreathers who like to drag race in 5000 pound SUVs.
This is obviously going nowhere with thick skulls. Use a speadsheet and gather all the numbers to calculate that diesel isn't the economical answer in the longrun. Getting a capable truck for true work is never economical.

Those you speak of live in the SRT forum. I'm done with this stupid thread.

5.7Unlimited is just really nice
Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

I don't know why you guys care about mileage? to get more fuel RANGE (which is understandable) or so that it costs less at the pumps (like 2 dollars less each time, big deal..)

Say if you add up your TCO over the years and you're ahead a few hundred for fuel savings (even though diesel is sometimes more expensive than even 89 octane gas)
but then you have to drop out 3 grand for a new turbo or (insert expensive diesel-specific part here) then what? Also consider that diesel engines usually cost more than even the 5.7 V8 offered in the JGC.

If you like the higher mileage because you think you can make a difference for the environment you should give it up because you can't.

I guess this might just be NA vs Euro debate, you Euro people really love your diesels for some reason.

ACCELERATION IS DETERMINED BY THE POWER CURVE

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

There's simply too much misinformed one eyed judgement in here for me to be concerned with.

Going forward, my biggest concern is what to choose next. I need the towing capacity of the hemi or the yet-to-be-proven diesel.
I keep my vehicles beyond the warranty period, and the Hemi driveline is well proven. The new diesel however, not so. I'm frightened of the potential failures post-warranty.
Secondly, I'd also miss the instant response and revability of the hemi, though I know the diesel will offer outstanding fuel economy and will also tow well, maybe even better than the Hemi...

Tough decisions ahead!

Re: Specs and details released for WK2 diesel at Geneva

There is a reason sales of diesel vehicles in the US doubled last year and it is not because a lot of folks are bad at math. Audi, VW, Mercedes and BMW all announced the arrival of diesel engines in more and more vehicles over the next few years. Even Porsche has announced a diesel Cayenne for the US!

JeepeeJ You have no idea and you do not know what you talking about. Firs you have to drive one for longer period of time and then you will know the truth.

of course, how silly of me to use the results carefully controlled performance tests when i could just use a random 'race' on the street
