Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

I've been watching my exhaust temps and getting into the habit of idling until exhaust temp drops below 500 degrees (fahrenheit). But I'd like a turbo timer instead to automate it.

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

turbo timers are not really needed. If you havent been on boost alot before shutting down, it wont hurt anything just to shut it off. If you have, let it sit for a minute. cooler oil is always being pushed through the turbo.

suzieque, how are you monitoring your exhaust temperatures?

I use a dashhawk to measure cat1b1 temp through the obd2 port, that's as close as you can get to raw exhaust temp without a probe.

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

Excuse me for asking, but what is a turbo timer and why is it needed? I have never had a diesel and I am considering it for the go when it arrives in the USA... Can..t I just drive it like a gas powered vehicle?????

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

A turbo timer leaves the engine running for a minute or two after you shut the engine off to let the turbo cool further. This was a feature on a lot of turbos 10+ years ago but you don't see it on the more technically advanced intercooled turbos today. If the manufacturer had not fitted one and they have tested it, I'm not sure why people think they are still necessary.

In short to answer your second question you can just drive it like a gas powered vehicle.

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

..to extend the lifetime of the turbo its basically a good idea to cool it down, of course only when needed. thats not when returning from the supermarket at home,
However, if you are on the autobahn travelling with 120mph its not a good idea to immedately stop the engine when stopping for a lunch while the turbo is still at 200000rpm..

Happy day

Achim

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

That looks like it's only good for vehicles up to 2004. On the race car i have an HKS unit and it works just fine with factory security.

Re: Turbo Timer for WK2 Grand Cherokee CRD

I tow at times with my jeep and would like a turbo timer that activates only at certain exhaust temperatures and shuts down at certain exhaust temperatures, but all the timers I found simply leave the vehicle running a fixed amount of time.
