Vibration when in R (under load/ up incline) - 3.0 CRD

Hi all,

I was out ferrying people around the other night. It was hammering down with rain and there were some massive puddles :D

The engine was warm, we stopped for a couple of hours and when I came to reverse out of the car park (the outside temp was around 9degrees C), there was an awful lot of vibration - similar to starting off in too high a gear) and a gruffness from the engine. At first I thought it might be the pads sticking a bit but having dismissed that idea I was careful to listen for it again the next time I started and drove off.

It did it again in the AM. Seems worse in reverse but then disappears after the engine has been running a couple of minutes.

Performance is good, no lights on. Just had an oil change and air/oil filter change.

Any ideas?

Cheers

update on problem ****

it seems the issue comes about when reversing, even when warm.

If i am on a slight incline (facing down) and select reverse, there is the normal revving noise but also a gruff note and vibration that seems to come from underneath the car. Again, think of the engine vibrating when it has too low a gear and you put your foot down. Its a bit like that but a little 'higher' in pitch.

Any ideas welcome.

I got underneath and had a good poke about. All the shielding seemed to be ok and and pan or protection reasonably solid. I manipulated some shielding to see if it was a similar noise and whilst it was, the vibration wasn't as much.

I can feel the vibration coming up through the driver's seat.

Hmmmm have a similar problem into stealership monday to see if they can find. Mine has been occurring on and off for 12 mths but now getting more consistent - does sound like a loose plate somewhere - I hope! Can't hear it outside but seems to come through the drivers footwell.
