battery problems

i bought my '14 about 4 months ago used. one day after shutting down, i left the lights on for about 20 minutes and the battery went dead. went to the dealer for recalls and they said the battery had a bad cell and replaced it.

now today the wife says the jeep wont turn over. has not run in 2 weeks, but the cool weather should not kill the battery that fast. anyone else having problems with batteries staying charged? this time if the battery is kaput i will go to get an AGM.

Re: battery problems

Baracuda, I had a loose connection on the alternator output. This caused the battery to run down (as it wasn't being charged correctly) and the rear of the alternator to be fried (the loose connection generated a lot of heat).

The alternator and harness were replaced and now it fine.

Re: battery problems

great suggestion there! will check that later the week when i am back stateside.

the only aftermarket thing that i can see attached to the electrical system is the actuator for the GT haus, but that is a keyed power source so should not cause a drain.

Re: battery problems

ok. finally back home today. unlocked the doors and the battery was so low that the lights were flickering. of course would not even click the starter.

check the battery, positive terminal connection was very loose (new battery installed under warranty 3 months ago by dealership). not super impressed, so tightened it back up. alternator charge wire is snug.

jumped it and let it run for 10 mins. voltage 14.4 on multimeter and 14.0 on dash. shut it down, would not restart. checked voltage on dash <8v, 8.6v multimeter.

now the question is whether the loose connection left the battery unable to charge properly, or there is a drain somewhere. will take it out tomorrow for a long ride to let it get a decent charge and test again.

on a positive note, i used my new pocket jumper battery. that thing was able to start the big v8 with ease even with a basically nonexistent battery. super neat gadget!

Re: battery problems

The cool weather will kill/weaken a battery if the vehicle hasn't been started in 2 weeks. I use a battery tender on my Roush Stage 3 during the winter months.
Good luck!

Re: battery problems

There was also an issue with the RA3/RA4 radios draining batteries due to them staying powered up after the ignition is turned off. You may want to look into that as well. Should be a TSB on that over on wk2jeeps.com under 08 electrical, radio enhancements.

Re: battery problems

Here's some more food for thought.

I had a dead battery on my 2011 GC Overland. Apparently, the battery was drained by a computer glitch. The computer thought the back hatch was open (it wasn't) & turned on the interior lights. The lights drained the battery. When I talked to the dealer, at the time (2012), they told me not the charge the battery myself and have the Jeep towed to the dealership. They ran an 8 hour (approx.) Chrysler diagnostic on the battery to determine if it was faulty. The battery was okay, so they charged it and started troubleshooting the Jeep's electrical system & computer. The dealer re-flashed the computer and the battery problem never recurred. They also kept my Jeep for an extra day to see if the battery kept its charge.

Other GC owners, at the time, had battery problems caused by loose ground connections and an electrical issue with the interior lights in the overhead console.
