Car shifting into neutral randomly

I believe my truck is somehow switching into neutral on its own. It has happened randomly at 2 stop lights and once on the highway. I don't think there's any way I could have hit up the shifter 3 times with out knowing I did. Anyone else think they have had this problem? 2014 SRT

Re: Car shifting into neutral randomly

Do you drive with your hand on the shifter? If you do, you are like me and it surprised me how easy it was for me to accidently "notch" that little shifter forward and then before you know it EVIC is telling me that I am in neutral.

Yes I do drive with my hand on shifter most of the time. It is very possible it is myself. Just odd I havent caught myself doing it yet.

Re: Car shifting into neutral randomly

Mine has done it twice. Both times my hand has been on the shifter so I assume that I bumped it... It does not take much at all to kick it up into neutral.

Re: Car shifting into neutral randomly

in-laws just got a new '14 Overland. I have to say, I've gotten over the aesthetics of the shifter and it is OK, BUT....the function is terrible. I really do not like the action of it. Even my father-in-law has had trouble taking it out of, and into various gears.

As someone who works in this area for the DoD and has a grad degree in it, I find the human factors of it terrible. There is a benefit to a full action, selective shifter that sits in a location directly associated and labeled with the gear function it is currently in, not a readout on a display.

Years ago there was a "genius" idea to make the hand controller (i.e. stick) in the F-16 an immobile, motionless stick that worked strictly on pressure sensation. It was a horrendous idea as the pilots complained of lack of positive feedback and were overcontrolling the aircraft due to overcompensation, the controllers were immediately retrofitted with those that allowed movement.

Re: Car shifting into neutral randomly

I like it, but it has taken some getting used to. For example, in bright sunlight, it's really hard to tell what gear you have just shifted into. With an old style mechanical shifter, you could feel the detents. Anyway, it's growing on me.

I too hit neutral the other day, AND the engine quit/stalled. I assumed I did something, as it started right up after and has been ok since... Seems a little fishy now that I hear others have had the problem.

It happened to me again the other day when both hands were on the steering wheel on the highway. It dinged and lit up to shift into drive/gear. The other 3 times my hand was on or near the shifter but still didn't think I hit it. I am hoping I am not going to keep running into this issue, seems like it could be a serious issue.

Re: Car shifting into neutral randomly

Guys, it happened to me last week with both hand on the steering wheel in a very embarrassing situation , on a complete stop, i tried to get into moving traffic when my GC-SRT went into neutral and the engine revved high and loud without moving, after 5 seconds it shifted into drive with a loud engagement sound and tire screaming like if i intended to.
The dealer couldn't find any problem.
