Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Service manager said he's had three techs working on it. On the lift, off the lift, on the alignment rack off the alignment rack, on the road off the road. He's driven it with techs riding in the back seat and rear cargo area with ear stethoscopes and body stethoscopes. He's absolutely floored at this point. He saids it's like it's got a little elf gremlin banging on the rear end with a little hammer. They've tightened every nut, bolt, and bushing and absolutely nothing has changed. I asked him about the transfer case, but he felt like the noise is coming from too far back in the vehicle. It would have to be an extreme case of noise transference is how he termed it.

How's yours coming along Larsen?

Care to try the transfer case?

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I know it sounds stupid, but is your license plate tight? I had a loose license plate frame and it was causing an awful random clunk from the rear end.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Thanks, but it's way to severe a clunk to be the license plate. The whole vehicle lurches forward on downshift. It would have to be one hellava heavy plate.

Now that I've initiated buyback they aren't interested in throwing further parts at it unfortunately.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Same here. I just got home with her and the one thing I have noticed is that the up shifts seem quicker and the drone/rumble associated with the MDS kicking in has been reduced. Great job Jeep on the software update.👍

The drive home confirmed why I'm getting another SRT. It's an amazing drive.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Here's another reason I'm glad I'm getting a replacement SRT. Things are never the same after they are replaced.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I had the latest software update done a week ago, but still have a hollow pop on the 6-5 downshift. It doesn't happen with each downshift, about 50% of the time. Is that the same sound you guys are experiencing? I can't say mine is a clunk, it's more of a hollow pop. The software update seemed to help with the 4-3-2-1 down shift and smooth it out, but 6-5 is still a bit rough.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I can't confirm the sounds are the same but mine has always been accompanied with a jolt to the vehicle as well. How many miles are on your vehicle. My problem started right away at approx. 250 miles.

Mine will typically pop when the down shift from 6-5 is rough (the vehicle will actually jerk). The next downshift may be smoother and then no pop. It started with about 350 miles, have 550 now. Now I'm starting to wonder how many vehicles have this same issue and people don't even realize it. I'm guessing it's fairly widespread. I'm anal about my vehicles, so I hear every little noise, squeak, etc. I'm hesitant to have the dealer start tearing stuff apart as it's obvious by this forum Chrysler has no clue what's causing it. I guess I'll live with it for now, but it will drive me crazy as each time it downshifts I now catch myself listening for it...

I'm feeling the same thing you're describing and haven't had any luck with the updates. A 8 hr battery disconnect made it not happen as often, but I this transmission thing has ruined my SRT experience. That and the dealer experience.

Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

It's probably going to get worse. Mine started the exact same way so did rlarsen's. Mines had valve bodies replaced, trans and torque converter, rear drive shaft assembly, rear diff and axles all replaced and it still isn't fixed. It is now being lemoned by Chrysler. You could start with the transfer case that's the one thing that hasn't been change on mine yet. What's your build date?
