Well,.....I've been doing some research and I found out that not only does the Jeep have the "clunk", but so does the newer Ram trucks with the 8 speed transmission AND the GMC/Chevrolet with 8 speed transmission. Very weird. I wonder why all these transmissions do the "clunk"?
Some of the folks that brought their Chevy and GMC back to service, said the service manager told them that the clunk was "normal". LOL
It's odd. Very odd.

I am guessing they used the same transfer cases...I will be taking my Jeep back to dealer tomorrow and taking him for a drive...I was surprised to hear they used the original transfer case to be honest...considering the new transmission was over $10,000 US$

I will update in due course...

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

What's weird is that they don't apparently ALL clunk...but a lot of them do. To be honest my new one drives about identically to the old one after the most recent software update. Which is to say it's sometimes really smooth, sometimes kinda rough and jerky, and every once in awhile I get a really rough 6-5 shift (usually when cold). However, the old vehicle clunked all the time on downshifting and the new one is silent. Weird.

Looks like mine is sorted this time, suffered from the clunks and awful ruough downshifts since new. After 4 updates I think it was, it is finally as it should be. Got it back from service yesterday and they told me that they applied another update to the transmission. The srt now feels like a srt should be, huge difference to what it was, now I'm happy

Definitely keep us posted. I've gone through 2 updates and still no luck. The last one was early June. Still clunks about 70% of the time. After the last software update it seemed be better for a while (only clunked 25% of the time) but after some miles went right back to the old behavior.

Exactly what happens to mine, couldn't describe it better. But has got much better while the mileage put on since the last update. It does not happen very often and is quite random. No doubt, still there.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

latest and first update done to my trans today here in Canada…ODO just hit 7000kms…..definitely felt smoother and did not clunk or have any rough downshift….my rig hardly had it before anyway, but I immediately noticed it shifted smoother today. They also did a PCM update too.

My last software update was in June, not sure if there has been something new since then. Mine still clunks 30-40% of the time, but it has actually gotten better with more miles since the last update (not sure why). Every once in a while I'll have a hard down shift from 5th to 4th, followed by a loud clunk, but for the most part the shifting has smoothed out and the clunks are much softer ( to the point with the radio on you don't hear them). Still not what I'd expect in a $70K vehicle, but looks like I live with it until it's time for something new......
