quit driving these badass machines like your grandmothers with eco mode and they'll be fine! I promise....no brake squeal....no clunking...no bullshit! lol If you bought this vehicle as anything other than a performance vehicle...you bought the wrong vehicle. go buy a Chrysler 200 to putt around in. Drive it like you stole it...youll thank me!

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I had a very similar issue in a BMW I had also with the ZF 8HP, I put 300,000km's on that SUV with no reliability issues at all. I also have this issue on the SRT I've just purhcased. Like some one else said it's not really designed for coasting around trying to obtain the best possible fuel economy. While good MPG is a benefit for such a large high performance vehicle you have to expect some 'oddities' if your driving it like you have your grandma in the passenger seat.
That being said, I have noticed this clunk from 6th > 5th doesnt present itself as much once the tranny temp is above 92'.

Just my opinion.

I drive mine hard, I've always driven V8's and driven them hard, my wife won't even let me drive if she and the kids are in the SRT bc she knows my driving habits, still have the damn trans clunk, steering wheel vibration problem. Funny you say that, my local srt rep said "if you stopped driving the damn jeep so hard you wouldn't have to see me so often.." That's when I had a water pump failure and they had to replace heads + gaskets

30k miles on mine, about 10 miles of them driven in ECO mode, never driven in auto mode in fact the next thing I do after starting it is turn the dial to sport every time, and that's only bc I can no longer drive it in track mode

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

While under the car I noticed a couple of things this morning that differenitate the ZF install in the SRT with ZF's in the BMW's/Audi's.
On the BMW's I've worked on the main drive shaft has two Guibos, in 4x4 configuration the forward shaft may also either have one or two Guibos. I see no Guibos on my SRT which would account for a different feelng betwen the ZF in the Jeep vs. a BMW or Audi and would account for slightly rougher shifts.
When I replaced the Transmission in the X5 I swapped out the soft rubber Guibos for polyurethane ones which made for a much harsher shift, more so down than up.

Just a brain dump from me someone may find interesting or have more input in to.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I dont notice any clunking on downshifts but my up-shifts in Track Mode are rougher than they should be.

This is Auto with Sport Shifting. The WOT 1-2 shift is a little rough. I've also noticed lag on the 4-5 shift. WOT, 1/2 Throttle, 1/4 Throttle, 2x Light Throttle:

This is Track Mode. The roughest 1-2 shift is at :01, you can see my phone shake. Even 2-3 was a bit jerky. 4-5 doesn't appear to be laggy as it is in Auto. I wish I could feel the way it used to shift stock because this is kind of ridiculous. Half Throttle, Quarter Throttle, WOT:

Jeep is at the dealer right now. Said its up to date Bring back the stock trans software!

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Well I guess I'm part of the clan.... 15 SRT, Noticeable harsh shifts for me are 6-5 and 3-2. sometimes coming to a stoplight it actually sounds like a 94 explorer I had with 190,000 miles on it. I've been to the dealer in schaumburg 2 times on it now. First time was a relearn (everything was good for about 400 miles) then got bad again..... and actually worse than before. Now I just picked it up after a new valve body and it is the worse its been....the dealer said "thats all we can do" I called the SRT hotline and they called the dealer and the service manager is going to call me back to schedule a time to ride in the vehicle with me.

This is my 3rd WK2 SRT (12,14,15) the 12(different trans) and 14 did not do this at all. (I kick myself for getting rid of the 14, but I drive so much and had a bunch of miles on it)

whether its a performance vehicle or not it should NOT drive like this. If there is no fix the car will be gone and i'll never buy another Jeep product (kind of a shame because I was thinking of buying another wrangler as a fun summer car)

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Call FCA and get a case started. How many miles are on it?

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

19,000 miles sir. Is SRT hotline not enough? The service manager just called me back now and seems to understand and wants to make it right. He Said he wants his "area manager" to see the vehicle and hear my story. I have a little reassurance now.

I hope they make this right. They make great looking and feeling cars I want to remain a fan.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

I might lay along for a little bit, but when they start playing the "they all do that" card I'd get FCA involved and request the name of a dealership that specializes in SRT vehicles.

Re: Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Hellcats do the same thing, but I've noticed the harder you drive 'em the smoother the shifts are. I also noticed the same thing on the jeep when I put it in sport or track mode and drove it like a granny the shifts were rough.
On my hellcat if I set the trans to sport or track the shifts are rough unless I drive it hard. If I set the trans to street or default it changes very smooth. Love the auto trans in the hellcat like the jeep but perfected.
