Driveline Shudder

I have a 2014 SRT that has a shudder in the driveline.

I brought it in to the dealer in April with noticeable lash during light acceleration/deceleration and a feeling of friction during very low speed turns. The tech went for a ride with me and murphy's law, we couldn't feel the lash or the hear the noise. I told them I would keep an eye on things and come back.

Fast forward to August and the friction feeling had developed into a shudder. It is noticeable during turns at under 5mph, such as turning into a parking space or when backing into my driveway. I don't think it happens at higher speeds, but I also don't turn as tightly then.

I brought it in again and the tech noticed the shudder but couldn't duplicate it on the hoist. They removed the driveshaft and found a rough/worn spot on the hanger bearing. The replaced the driveshaft assembly and test drove believing the issue to be resolved.

I picked up the jeep and noticed the same shudder when I got home. Brought it back last Friday day for a ride with the tech and he heard/felt the shudder but was unsure of the cause. He thought it may be a clutch shudder from the rear diff. They drained the old rear diff fluid and replaced with new fluid including a modifier. Asked me to drive over the weekend and see if it improved. It has not.

I am wondering if it is limited slip related. I read the select-track makes electronic changes to the center and rear differential settings. Maybe the differential are locked in when they shouldn't be?

I have another appointment Thursday morning to try and resolve the issue. Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue or suggestions to fix?

Thanks.

Sounds like you may have won the drivetrain lottery. Several folks have experienced this issue...usually during downshifting. Check out this thread to see some other folks that have been to the dealer quite a few times to get it resolved with varying results.

Clunk/thunk on 6-5 coasting downshift.

Well the dealer couldn't replicate the issue on a test drive. The service manager called me and asked me to come in for a drive with him. After 5-10mins he was able to witness the issue and agreed right away that it was not normal. He guessed it was rear diff but wanted to get in touch with jeep to get their opinion and approval to swap the rear end.

He said the driveshaft they replaced already was almost $6000 in cost. The diff would be almost $7000. I assume there is some exaggeration going on there but I am really glad my jeep is under warranty either way.

Hope to hear back today on what jeep says to do. Keep you posted.

Thanks, I passed it along to my service tech. I'm sure they get random internet related suggestions from people all the time. The same way I am sure doctors love WebMD suggestions.
Tech said that Jeep wanted to run a few tests/troubleshoot on it this week. Since I am flying, I dropped the jeep off for a few days. Hope to know more in a couple days.
