Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

Confirmed that update was not applicable to 2015, mine showed as all updated already when they scanned it.

Got a call back from the service manager today, they got the transmission warmed up and put it on the rack and shifted from P/N/D repeatedly, which he claimed duplicated the same noise I demonstrated to him when downshifting from 6-5. Said they listened under from front to back and the sound appeared to be coming from the rear end but they couldn't localize it.

One of his techs tried to claim that the transmission behavior was normal backlash and programmed in due to EPA regulations, which sounded like BS to me. I mean, I understand that they are maximizing programming for mileage, but if Chrysler really intended their flagship $70K+ Jeep product to clunk and jerk all the way down the gear range they need to have their head checked.

It's not over yet, the service manager will be talking to Chrysler tomorrow and hopefully getting some info on this issue. He expressed concern several times that he didn't have another one on the lot to compare to, but I was quick to warn him just because another one does it, doesn't mean it's right (if there was a batch of bad parts or something).

If we aren't moving to a resolution of some kind by the end of the week, I will get Chrysler customer service involved directly. I wish they would just call the dealer in MI that just replaced the transmission and compare notes, but they seem reluctant for some reason.

Still no jerks from 6-5, and the clunking is gone after the replacement?

Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

I'm calling B.S. as well. If it's the rear end why doesn't it clunk in every gear? All cars make noise when shifting from D/P/N it's driveline slop. My new tranny is shifting much better than the old one. It has a definite positive downshift, but that loud clunk is now gone as well as the awful vibration I was getting. I was hoping that the latest TSB would get it to near perfect. I guess i'll have to wait. I can at least live with it now unless it gets bad again. I've had a few harder than expected 7-6 downshifts(very sporadic), but still nothing like my old 6-5 downshift.

It sounds like your getting the go around like I got. I think it's because they don't know why it's doing it or how to fix it, so they have to tell you something. I'm questioning the quality control on these transmissions. They all seem to have their own personalities.

Did they inspect the mounts and bushing on the rear end assembly?

Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

They made it sound like they didn't see any movement/contact so it makes me suspect they didn't actually get torque on any mounts.

I will take the SM's word for it that he's going to be in touch with Chrysler tomorrow, also I am supposed to be picking up the vehicle with no work performed at this point. I will be speaking with him daily and like I said by Friday I will be contacting Chrysler myself...trying to give them the benefit of the doubt but if this is supposedly normal I'd like to hear it directly from the manufacturer...sounds like the same pathway you took.

Think this is the 3rd time I've updated and from about 3000 miles to 4300 miles, my 5-4 lurch hasn't happened for over 2 weeks now. Pretty damn smooth, not as smooth as my wife's Q5 though....wont be holding my breath for that to happen.

Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

Well...with unexpected speed Chrysler has come back and instructed the dealer to put a new transmission in my truck (internal defect cited), sight unseen based on the evidence so far.

Queue theories on how much they know this may be a problem with a certain run of these vehicles...

I will keep the post updated with my progress, luckily so far it seems Jsboening has had good luck with his replacement but too early to tell.

Hopefully if it does turn out to be a wider issue, they're able to isolate it to a single batch of 8HP70's from ZF and issue a limited recall to take care of those that might not be as sensitive as me and Js before it becomes a bigger issue down the road.

Spoke with Jeep Customer Care today, told me the transmission wasn't showing as being available until 2/20, but that they were going to try and take care of me either by expediting it if possible or compensating me otherwise. I'm still early in the process. They were very professional and apologetic, but I've already been without the truck for a week.

Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

2014 SRT, Trans valve body replaced, still harsh 5-4 downshift and slight low speed shift clunks....Now for something new, at idle, Jeep began to exibit a vibration that you could feel.....Yesterday, I noticed that there was no cool air coming from the vents, tried all the temp settings and AC settings.....NO AC !.....Turned AC system off, till I can get in to the dealership next week for repairs, and now noticed the strange vibration is gone, I suspect the AC Compressor has failed.....I love this SRT, but I'm pretty dissatisfied with the number of problems I have had with it already, It only has about 6K miles on it, and the trans has always been a problem since day one.....My dealer always wants to keep my car for at least 2 days at a time.....big pain....... I hope we can get all the bugs out of it soon, or I may be looking at other new vehicles to replace it with.....I had a Ram 1500 4X4, that was loaded and close to problem free prior to my SRT, and the dealers service was far better.....Too bad Jeep can't have the same quality control that Dodge seems to have, Same parent company, especially when dealers in my area are demanding up to $30K over sticker for new Jeep SRT's.......

Strongly suggest you contact Jeep Customer Service 877-426-5337, both myself (so far), and Jsboening have had good experiences with them and they may be willing to intervene if you're not getting satisfaction from your dealer, to make things right.

I'm in the same boat as you, love the vehicle, drive, features, but needing a transmission right out of the gate is a BAD sign.

Cool Re: Drivetrain "clunk" noise - 2014 wk2 srt

Thanks, My dealer has gotten a little bit better after I contacted the dealer's General Manager and voiced my complaints......also just today I came across a BRAND NEW Tech Service Bulletine dated Jan 29, 2015.......Bulletine number 21-005 15, it is a new possible software fix for 2014 SRT transmissions..... I will have it done when the Jeep goes in next week for the AC problem.....maybe a final fix is at hand, I'll keep my fingers crossed.....:

Do you have any idea what the production date is on your 14'? I'm wondering if it's close to our 15's with September build dates.

I had the last tranny TSB done on Friday... Fingers crossed but on the way home it was the smoothest it has ever been... Was taking it easy as the strut just got replaced but it didn't do the 5 to 4 jerk as it has with every other update...

That's awesome. Now if only they'd come out with an update for the 15's.
