No brakes!

Went in for the booster recall to have the shield installed, and the dealer took it off the road due to compromised master cylinder seals resulting from failed booster. Now, no brakes. Asked to bring it home and protect it in my garage, but the pedal went right to the floor and I had to park it again using the parking brake. So, it sits on the dealer lot, off the road for 17 days and counting.

Re: No brakes!

More likely caused by the tech ignoring step one in the TSB. A failed booster should not effect the seals in the master cylinder. Even in the recall it says if the booster fails you will have to press harder on the brakes, as you would with manual brakes.

"1. With the engine not running and the ignition OFF, pump the brake pedal until a firm pedal is achieved (4-5 strokes).
CAUTION: Vacuum in brake booster must be pumped down before removing the master cylinder from the brake booster. This is necessary to prevent the master cylinder primary piston from being pulled out of the master cylinder as the master cylinder is separated from the brake booster. This can be done by pumping brake pedal, with vehicle engine not running and the ignition OFF, until a firm feeling brake pedal is achieved."

Good that you left it with the dealer. Amazing they actually asked you to drive it with diagnosed compromised brake system. They probably didn't want you to start counting the lemon law days while waiting for out of stock parts. Shame on them!

Luv it when a vehicle leaves the dealership in worse condition than when it was taken in.

Re: No brakes!

Actually, it was me who asked the dealer service manager if I could take it home and protect it in my garage, because I was told it could be 8-10 weeks waiting for the parts. He was on vacation when it was taken off the road and parked. Most times, they're all very good and I usually have no complaint. I guess he thought it still had the braking it came in with, but was just waiting for a booster, so he said OK. Not sure how they put it out in the lot, and why not tell him, but things don't always happen like you'd expect.

Today, the visor wiring recall arrived, so I took that down and added it to the order. Also, Chrysler Customer Care seems to be responding to my request to expedite the brake repair. I have to get my boat out of the lake before ice comes, and that can happen soon in northern Ontario. Won't risk a frozen engine block on the boat, and can't get a rental with a hitch here, so CCC is trying to get the parts in next week.

Re: No brakes!

Coming up on one full month now that I've been driving the rental Chevy, the oddly named Equ nox (the "i" fell out of it's name) As much as I am annoyed at Chrysler for this recall on the JGCs, the General has convinced me of one thing as a result of driving the Chevy for a month. I now realize I should never consider buying a General Motors product.

Re: No brakes!

So missing an "I" is worse than no brakes?

Re: No brakes!

Same thing just happened to me last week.

Took the SRT in on Friday for the brake booster shield and got a call that the master cylinder "exploded".

I only waited a few days for parts? (brake booster and master cylinder) Not sure why you waited so long and I didn't?

Picked it up today and somethings definitely wrong. There is so much slop in the brake pedal it's disconcerting. Absolutely not the braking feel that I'm used to or that belongs on this performance suv.

Egh, now I've got to take it back. Grrrrr.....

Re: No brakes!

Well, I finally got the call that the my booster recall parts have arrived - 5 months after they were ordered.

I'll be taking my Jeep in the 1st week in December to have the work done. Fingers crossed that the install will go smoothly.
