Only 200 Miles and an Oil Leak Already

Hey all,

I did some searching around, and saw some posts about oil filter leaks, but not sure this is another one as the car only has 200 miles. I've noticed in the last few days that there is a slight oil burning smell when up to temp. I crawled underneath and there is what appears to be engine oil coating the transmission pan and cover plate. Couldn't get a great look from the drivers side.

I'm taking it in first thing to put it on the lift to see what's really going on. It's a little discouraging to see this on a brand new SRT. Especially when my 2011 Overland was perfect and my wife's 2014 Laredo has been stellar.

Any insights to your experiences would be great.

I don't know if it's lucky or not, but did do a thorough check this morning and the it's not coming from the engine. The filter and drain plug were bone dry.

The majority of the fluid is pooled up towards the rear of the transmission pan. The fluid is odorless and looks like a lager beer in color. I know the 8 speeds are factory fill for life so maybe the traditional red fluid is a thing of the past? I'm having the dealer put it up in the air to see if the cooler connections are leaking as the drain plug and pan seem to be solid.

Not something I want to see after paying what I did for this beast.

Ryan

Re: Only 200 Miles and an Oil Leak Already

UPDATE: I was able to get the SRT tech to look at it and it looks like the transmission oil cooler fittings are to blame. They are ordering a new set and will need the car a day or two to drain the system and replace them.

I thought this issue was fixed early during the 2014 model year. Oh well, I hope this fixes it since I would really like to feel confident about opening her up.

Just took the SRT into the dealer and got it fixed. Their SRT tech pulled the transmission cooler lines and inspected and re-torqued them. He said it was a combination of loose fittings and an overfill from the factory. The ac drain line dumping onto the lines made it look worse.

Overall, a little problem that will hopefully be the last. Now I'm ready to put some real miles on her.

thanks for the posts on the issue. good to know how things like this happen, and that thankfully, it wasn't a big deal in the end (although disappointing i'm sure).

now enjoy the beast!

Thanks all, it was a little nerve racking to hear them talking about having to replace the transmission if they couldn't stop the leak. Just glad it was an easy fix.
