Mobli One was used until mid year 2010. Do you know why Mopar switched? The switch happened when Fiat took control of Chrysler. Fiat owns Ferrari, and Ferrari has an agreement with Shell/Pennzoil so Chrysler could no longer endorse Mobil1. Both 6.1 and 6.4 engines*were engineered to operate with 0W-40 oil so the dealership needs a quality oil to service SRT8 vehicles, in reality Pennzoil is playing catch up to Mobil1 with this viscosity. Its all about money. When released in early 2010 the 5qt jug was only $28. Can't figure out why they'd charge that much. I'd run!
thanks for your insight....not my first go on the merry go round. Ive used mobil1 ext performance in every vehicle Ive owned since 2003.....and that includes 600hp imports, jeeps, lexus etc. I just wanted to stick with the 0w-40 pennzoil since I heard good things about it, it helps support SRT...and i thiught Id take a walk on the wild side...LOL. I didnt really need a lecture....just thought it was rediculous what they tried to charge me.

Wasn't a lecture. Just sharing pertinent information sir. This is a forum afterall.. just saying I've been around a few Gen 3 Hemis and was sharing my insight. I'll just go start another 2014 thread.

Re: Ughhhh....first oil change! $171?

Since its related to the oil, as per the engineers chat, do all gen 3 hemi's have the cam phasers? I ask because the Engineer stated that 0W oil works best with cam phasers. Of course 0W-40 Mobil 1 will work just fine but numerous threads on bobstheoilguy website show that the pennsoil ultra is superior based on blackstone tests. Is it $3 / qt better, who knows but I don't get hung up on spending an extra $21 on a $65,000 vehicle every 6000 miles.

The $17 / qt they were trying to charge is borderline rape.......

FYI-i didn't pay $171. I like to change myself....but thought it would be good to have a dealer visit on its history.

From the last engineer chat:

SRT Engineers:
There are some disadvantages to 5W-40 usage for the cam phasing system (rather than the MDS system). The fast acting cam phaser system was designed to utilize synthetic 0W-40 vis oils. The oils we recommend are 0W40 Pennzoil Ultra (with 250 ppm moly added which gives additional cam phasing benefit - very positive on this oil) and our old SRT oil Mobil 1 (with 110-160 ppm moly).

Re: Ughhhh....first oil change! $171?

I have the 4 oil changes from the dealer included with my purchase...I'm in Nashville,TN the dealer likes and offered "Royal Purple" for my 392...so that is what has been in my rig...they are a big dealership, 6 SRT Challengers on the lot...

So if a dealer is using something other than Pennzoil as a brand of oil and they are doing the changes and it's documented "warranty reference" that should clarify it does not matter which brand you use...as long as it's 0-40 synthetic.

After my 4 are used up I'm doing it myself screw the $100-200.00 oil changes that's rediculus.

By the way the royal purple is good oil, my 392 runs like a sewing machine smooth, quiet, refined as it should.

Your dealer is doing you a disservice, the only reason they use Royal Purple is it costs them less than buying the Pennzoil from Chrysler. Your engine would run just the same with the Pennzoil and you would have the added satisfaction of knowing its what the engineers have tested and suggested, not what a dealer can get cheapest that meets the generic requirements.

Not all oils have the same "build". The engineers have mention the ppm moly in the pennzoil specifically for the cam phaser system. The pennzoil has about double the ppm moly over Mobil 1. I would make sure the royal purple has the same "build" as the recommended and tested pennzoil.

I would be happy if it was every 6k miles that would be at least 18 months for me BUT owners manual says 6 months OR 6k miles
