What caused damage to my front tires inner edges only

While removing my front wheels to do my brakes I found severe damage to the inner edges of my front tires! There has never been any pull or shake or even inflation problems! The only thing I can think of is my driving when I will hang a corner close to a 1G from time to time? Could I of ripped the corner of the tire right off? Has anyone else experienced this?

I also want to add that these are the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Verde run flats 295/45-20 with almost 32k miles!

Re: What caused damage to my front tires inner edges only

That's a camber issue you have there (bad wheel alignment).

Re: What caused damage to my front tires inner edges only

If it was strictly wheel alignment, wouldn't the worn area have gotten wider before that narrow band got so deep?

I'm not discounting the possibility of it being an alignment problem. I would still look for some wear spots on suspension parts.

same issue with the run flats on the WK1 SRT.

Re: What caused damage to my front tires inner edges only

A person doing the wheel alignment would also check for a worn front end component that may have contributed to the wear.

On my WK1, had same wear/separation issue after 18k miles, but on the OUTER edge (LF). Common problem on the runflats, didn't figure it was an alignment issue. Goodyear pro-rated the wear and paid 75% of the cost for new tires...

Now, with 25k miles on the 2nd set of tires, have the SAME issue with the LF tire, but on the INNER edge, almost identical to 2nglenn's tire.

Now on my 3rd set... alignment experts: is this definitely an alignment issue? Even though first set outer edge, 2nd set inner edge? The tire wear is perfectly level across the tire, the wear/separation is only on the extreme edge/side.

Did you say you have 32000 miles on those tires?

There is still plenty of tread there. How many miles can you get out of those things.

Re: What caused damage to my front tires inner edges only

My WK1 SRT8 has 15k on the clock. I am lowered, but installed the JBA control arms and aligned the front to -0.25 degree. I still have inner tread separation. This does not appear to be a problem with non run-flat tires, which have a pretty good history if you go by the red site.

So I have a hypothesis: The sidewall of run-flat tires is so stiff that there is a flex point where the sidewall meets the tread. I think this flexure causes the tread to separate, just like bending a wire back and forth at one point will cause the wire to break.

I'd say 30k miles on such a heavy brick is pretty good.
