Chrome Removal - Blacked Out

Finished up replacing all the external chrome trim and badging with glossy black. Changes made include:

Grill Rings
Lower Bumper Rings
Jeep Logos (front and back)
SRT Logo in back
Grand Cherokee Logos on Doors
All Window Trim
Powder Coat Rims
Black License Plate is on order but not yet received

I know this look isn't everyone's preference but thought there may be others contemplating that would want to see what the final product looks like - very happy with the outcome.

Re: Chrome Removal - Blacked Out

Beautiful! I'm pretty much doing the same thing phinam, and have the same items on order. Appreciate your post and showing what a clean blacked out SRT would look like.

I'm considering also smoking the tail lights but will have to research the legal aspects as this may be considered a defect in Austraila.

I'll PM you as I'm not sure about the rules in this forum for promoting sponsors/non-sponsors.

Please post for us to see. Rules here are set to help the Jeep community, not stifle it like another jeep site.

I got the replacement parts (logos/badges, grille rings) from buymoparpartsnow.com. They seemed to have the best prices and availability. I called them two times to ask questions before I ordered and they were extremely helpful. As a bonus, there was no sales tax when shipping to Texas. For the window trim, I used 3M 1080 gloss black vinyl which I purchased on Amazon. It was a 4ft x 5ft sheet which was more then enough to cover - and it left me some extra in case I screwed it up.

Re: Chrome Removal - Blacked Out

OP-I'm waiting for all my black pieces to show up how hard is it to replace the grill rings and the rings for the brake ducts? Any advise you have on replacing any of the badging would be appreciated I'm doing the same thing you did. Thanks

Grill rings and brake duct rings are easy. If you don't have a set, it's worth spending $10-$15 to get a trim removal kit - makes it much easier and since they are plastic greatly reduces chance of scratching your paint. When you get your replacements, take note of the clip placement for each one and then you'll know better how to pop off. Basically, you get one clip to release and then just work your way around. I found it easiest to get the bottom of the grill rings loose first and then just give them a tug. I wasn't worried much about breaking them as I wasn't going to re-use, but none of them broke.

The badges are a pain - especially the Grand Cherokee logo when it comes to removing all the sticky. I heated the badge with a hair dryer and then used fishing line to cut through the back. Once you get the badge off, use your finger and roll the extra sticky like a rolling pin. Then you can use goo-gone to remove the residual sticky. For all except the back Jeep badge, I used painters tape to mark the bottom and side locations of the old badge before I removed. For the rear Jeep badge that is embedded into the metal, I doubled the fishing line to keep it from breaking and worked it behind the "p". Once I got that far, I heated it again and then was able to get my fingers behind it and pull it off. It has alignment tabs that make it easy to install the new one perfectly.

Good luck!

Re: Chrome Removal - Blacked Out

Thanks! I work at a car dealership so detail has everything I need! I will give it a shot and post pics when I get it done later this week. My hitch cover is getting replaced also since it doesn't have the SRT embossed is that easy to replace?

Phinam,

What did you do to the chrome trim around the windows? Is it painted?
