I have never seen a cop yank on a license plate to see if it will come off.
The OP came up with a practical solution. But, to me, having the plate off to the side hurts the look of the car more than the standard bracket.
If you live where you will always have a front plate, what's wrong with drilling holes to mount it? I kind of understand that some have a real aversion to a front plate. But if you are going to mount it anyway, why not bolt it on. You, and nobody else, will see the holes.
