Hi all,
After looking over google search results for some of my questions I stumbled across this site and what a beauty of information!
I placed my order for a MY15 SRT last Friday and since then time seems to be going backwards waiting for it to arrive. That being said, I was lucky that my exact specs was already on order and will be delivered in 3 weeks.
I got the white SRT with sunroof/audio package. I've left the wheels as the standard Goliath as I didn't feel the spider monkeys were $3k worth of rim.
This leads me to my question... Are there any ramifications in changing the rims from the standard 20" to 22"/24"? When I mentioned to the salesman that I would look to change the rims he advised not to go larger than the standard 20" as it would mess up the tyre pressure readings in the computer and would just not work.
If that is the case, is it something that the computer would then be able to be altered to factor in bigger rims? If that's not possible do you then think it's a small trade off to deal with (ie manually checking tyre pressure) to enable you to have bigger sexier rims?
You will want to either transfer the tire pressure monitors or get new ones but will have no issue with a larger wheel when it comes to the tire pressure system.
Generally you will go with a smaller sidewall tire so your overall circumference is roughly the same so you should have minimal issue with the speedometer being of as well ( in case he brought that up too).
Larger wheels usually weigh more so you will lose some performance but it's usually not too noticeable and again this can vary by final size, manufacturer and type of wheel.
You mentioned to transfer the tire pressure monitors or get new ones, are they detachable sensors or the like? Tbh I've not actually given much consideration as to how the tyre pressure monitors actually work.
When you say larger wheels weigh more and will lose some performance, surely a couple of kg's (lbs) added to a car with a 6.4ltr hemi wouldn't be noticed... I hope.
This is why I asked in here instead of going back to the dealer and asking them more about it. Great answers from people that know.
Yes they are transferable, they bolt in and can be removed once the tires are off. Since the factory tires won't fit the new wheels though it might make sense to sell the old wheels with tires as a package and just get new sensors...
Not sure the exact price but weren't all that pricey last time I checked and most tire shops should have them in stock.
Yes, a few kg more won't be all that noticeable, but some lower cost aftermarket wheels can really add a lot of weight... It is rare and they are usually very expensive but some have found 22s lighter than factory weight so it can vary a LOT.
I'm looking to change the wheels fairly quickly after picking up the vehicle so with any luck I'll get some money for the standard wheels/rims to put towards the new ones!
So, with the new pressure monitors, are they just a plug and play type thing? Or will there need to be any calibration with the computer? Just trying to establish if anyone can put them on of it it a more specialised type of fitment.
Yes they are plug and play, within 2 - 10 revolutions of the wheel after installing them the computer should pick them up without issue. In other words, by the time they are backed out of the garage and you start to head out they should be good to go.
Oh, one more add, keep in mind when you are looking at wheel weight that its not just a single number... Adding 10kg of body weight after a large Holiday meal and sitting in the car is NOT the same as adding 2.5kg more on each wheel...
The vehicle not only has to carry the extra weight of the wheels but it has to spin it... Its been far too long since school for me to remember the exact multiplier and don't have time right now to look it up but it can be significant...
Sorry, don't mean to beat this to death just wanted you to have the whole story... If you find a few wheels you like and cant make up your mind by the look, I would use the weight to help decide the final winner. But if you simply find some you love and feel are perfect for your ride, then I say go for it...
Definitely something to keep in mind when searching for new wheels. Hadn't thought of it like that but am now glad that I am.
karlrockdrain was on the money though. I'm from Melbourne Australia and the Spider Monkeys are a $3k addon here. To me they're nice, but there's plenty nicer for plenty less money.
