Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

nking about putting an additional sub in the jeep to pick up the low end.

if i understand correctly, i can tap into the speaker wire before the sub and use something like the LC2i to give me some RCA inputs for the amp.

Is this correct? i am a little dumb with these new systems. and if i don't have to pull the dash apart to get to the back of the radio module, all the better.

the one thats there is mediocre at best, but i would like to keep it as a midbass and add a 15" in the spare tire well. dont want to go stupid, but i am thinking a nice SQ sub with 2500w or so will round out the bottom nicely and have enough power to thump a little if so inclined.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

Any good audio shop will just get the signal from the wiring harness that runs to the factory sub.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

A few comments from someone with the un-modded factory HK and just a general working knowledge of car audio (so take it easy on me )...

You will likely overheat the amp in the current system by adding another higher drawing sub. I say this because every time I crank anything with bass it's not long before she cuts out to cool off. I usually have to cycle the ignition to get it back. Would you be adding an additional amp to drive it? How would this fit in with the factory amp/DSP?

The stock digital DSP's crossover is not configurable AFAIK so you are stuck with the frequencies sent to each channel and since they are not published AFAIK you have no way to properly match the added sub to the frequency it's being supplied. Do aftermarket SQ subs have selectable frequency response settings for trial and error fine tuning when you are stuck with unknown source signal specs?

In case you did not have it, here is the HK wiring diagram for reference. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

The LC2i has high (speaker) level inputs that let it gather the frequency and amplitude of the power and send that info in low level RCA feed that would go to additional amplifier. Tapping into the sub speaker wire would take advantage of th crossover already built into the factory eq. I could then tune the crossover on the additional amplifier to further lower the frequency band.

I looked at the diagram for the system. Seems there are 2 pairs of wires for the sub. I am thinking dual voice coil unbridged is what they have going on.

I do not trust any shop in my area for anything. Unfortunately they universally suck at all of their respective trades.

If anyone knows of there is a sub preamp output anywhere on the factory processor or amplifiers.

The stock amp puts out like 1000 watts they claim but they add "equivelant" behind it so I am thinking less than 600 for the whole vehicle based on the ear dyno. I would be adding a separate 2000 + watt amp and zero gauge wiring of course. And a remote knob for amp gain. After all, this is my wife's DD

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

About the SQ subs, just stands for sound quality..... good volume but very fast and sensitive. As opposed to SPL subs (sound pressure level) that are made with the focus on moving lots of air, but can be sloppy. However, they will Wang hard.

All tuning will be done by adjusting manual gains, croasovers, and filters on the amp. Pretty Mikey mouse, but I am not adding an EQ setup to the whole rig.
I would build a custom braced box that would fit into the spare tire well and be removable for more storage. Trying to fit an 18" in there, but mounting depth and woofer excursion need to be checked.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

I would be interested in how this works out too. While the sounds quality from the HK is ok, maybe a little bright for me, I'm not happy with the depth of bass from the HK sub and would like to replace this with a decent JL 10" 0r 12" and appropriatley matched amp.

I replaced the standard speakers, amps, wiring in my X5 with an MS-8 and amps, this was a fairly easy install as I could easily recode the CIC to output low level meaning I didn't need line convertors. I don't think it would be easy or possible to obtain low level outputs from the UConnect, it seems to communicate with the amp via canbus.

As the HK has a dual VC sub did you or will you be using both of the sub outputs in the LC2i ?

Thanks buddy.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

unfortunately due to big cuts at work i have not been able to move any further with this other than just planning.

i have been fighting a torn meniscus in my knee for the last 8 months, but the wife said if i go in for surgery to get it corrected i can put a sub in her jeep while recovering. so i think i may just lay out a custom fiberglass enclosure in the back and get that built since i have some glass mat and resin laying around. i was going between which sub to get and i need to see what space is available first.

on second thought, may just steal one of the W3V3s and amp i have in the truck and see how well the signal picks up with the LC2i. either way i want a bigger sub, but at least i can tell if the frequency is correct.

Good luck brotha, tore left meniscus too, thankfully arthroscopic surgery rules

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

AFAIK, the stock sub doesn't get a full signal, so you wouldn't be able to have the new sub pick up freqs. that aren't there. You may want to pull a full signal from another speaker and use the filter on the amp.

Too many mods to list for each, so let's just say a lot was done over the years.

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

any progress here? Interested in adding a sub as well...spare tire location is perfect for a great 12", and I would run a 1200-1500 watt amp. please post up any info and I am going to start looking into this as well. Thanks for starting this thread!

Re: Adding a sub to the hk 19 speaker system

update (well no update actually)

got the lc2i in. seems that the amplifier for the speakers is in the rear of the vehicle, driver side. i didnt get to dive into it too far, as i wasnt able to be on my feet long enough, then back to work. should be back end of july and at least get the lc2i hooked up.

about the frequency response, i dont know whether the low pass filter is in the amp or the processor unit. i will have to bring my SVS home theater sub down to hook into lci, its tuned to 16hz so will know for sure if its getting all the low lows. if not, may have to go up the line and pull signal from before the factory amp.

i really wanted to put an 18 in there with a tight sealed box, but i dont think that will work without moving metal or having the sub stick out into the cargo area. RE, FI, and SQubed all mount too deep. i would like to keep the lid fitting properly on the top. looking like a 12 or maybe a shallow 15 will be the way to go with a sonotube enclosure for easy of removal when more storage is necessary.
