Question Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

About to order a 2015 SRT, just curious if the HK $2000+ option is worht the money? Is the standard 9 speaker system fine for a guy that doesnt pound the base or is an audiophile or is it just really bad?

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I've never listened to the HK system. The audiophiles out here don't care for the Alpine system. I have the Alpine and it sounds just fine to me. Would I spend an extra $2K for the HK? Nope.

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I think the HK sounds great - particularly given a vehicle is one of the worst acoustic environments to listen to music. Worth $2k? Probably not but my rationale was if I was spending the money on an SRT, I may as well load it up.

Manufacturers make lots of money on these extras so they're never worth what you pay. What is worth it to me is having a great performance SUV with a great sound system. For me, just enhances my overall satisfaction with the vehicle and to me, that's worth $2k.

I listened to both and I did order it as it was quite different. This is a personal choice, but remember, when it is time to sell it will be an option that many want.....good luck with your decision! Ron

I like the HK stereo I compared the two and the HK does sound a good bit better to me. If you are into trying to get the best sound then make the upgrade. The negative is XM/sirus radio, the signal is compressed too much and it doesn't really sound that good on either of the stereos. If you are someone that all you listen to is XM then don't waste your money on the HK because you likely wont be able to appreciate the better sound it can deliver. with XM both of the systems sound about the same to me not much improvement or worth it. If you use a good source such as a properly recorded SD card, CD or stream Pandora or the others through Bluetooth you will hear the better sound. One reason I went with summit was the HK upgrade but one minus with that was no tow hooks lol added those on though so all is good I know you don't care about those with SRT though. Probably best to make the comparison yourself using the format you typically use. If your still on the fence, get it because if you are like me and you don't get something you will sit around wishing you had a few months from now. lol Good Luck

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I know a lot of people complain about the sound quality of XM radio. I can't speak for the HK system but I discovered a quirk quite some time ago on the U-Connect setting side of things that has an impact on sound quality.

Every time I shut the vehicle off it seems to disable the radio's equalizer settings. When I start the vehicle I go into the equalizer settings, press the bass level up one notch then back down one notch to my original setting. This turns the equalizer back on, or wakes it back up. The sound quality improves dramatically.

I'm sure it's a bug in the U-Connect software but I'm not sure how many people realize that or have given that a try on their own vehicle to see if it makes any improvement for them.

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I read about the equalizer glitch a while ago and checked mine for it and I don't think it impacts the HK or it doesn't on mine anyway. I don't get what it is with XM some channels are half ok sometimes and others are just terrible. Really noticeable when going right from XM to SD or streaming that is when you really hear it. I mostly use the streaming now, im actually surprised it sounds as good as it does, initially I thought it was going to be like XM.

I haven't tried an SD card yet but I agree... some XM stations sound better than others. And that's a noticeable difference.

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I can't say if it's worth $2K but I'm really happy with it. The quality of Sirius/XM is another story and I try to avoid it whenever possible. I've been using a newer service called Tidal Music Streaming which streams lossless/CD quality but it's not cheap ($20/month).

For some damn reason I'm not able to control my iPod through Uconnect and it's killing me. I want to be able to bury my iPod in the dash and control it via the touchscreen as opposed to via the iPod.

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

Thanks for all the replies. I own a property mgmt company in a college town, so most of my "driving" is quick trips where I am in and out of my vehicle a lot. Hence the reason I want to go with an SRT, feels like a sports car but has the utility of an SUV which I must have.

That being said, I dont have many times in my car where I'm on long trips or going out to the clubs etc, its mostly in the background around town.

Sounds like I should go listen to both systems in any grand cherokee and decide if its worth the bump.

Re: Harmon Kardon Option Worth to $2000+

I bought a used 2014 instead and the dealer said it didnt have the HK, then a week later I found the original window sticker in the car and it had the HK, dealers loss, my win.
