Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

I have been really happy with mine, but I do hit a SAT channel every now and then that soesnt sound too good.. I listen to a lot of DVD concerts in mine and noticed it wasnt too hot and searched for setting to change the sound. I finally found out if you choose the language button off of the DVD menu it will allow it to actually play in 5.1 This made a huge difference in the sound of my system. After listening to a DVD in the correct mode everything else sounds bad. Also, the SPL output and clarity is way above the SAT or CD when the correct DVD setting is used.

A question, for you guys....can we record or replay from listening to the SAT?

Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

I now have had 500 miles of seat time in my SRT8 and, compared to my 2011 Limited, the Harman I believe is worse. I have both set to the same settings and the Harman is much "softer". When I wanted to jam out I would regularly leave the sound level at 20 (26 on a really good song) however with the SRT8 I am finding that my regular volume is around 22-24 and jamming at 28.

Bass is decreased in comparison as well. Listening to Brass Monkey Bestie Boys would shake everything in the vehicle, not so much now. Changing back to stereo mode does increase output but not by much. I will give the Harman this, the mids and highs are clearer with more refinement. However, with a lacking bottom end the system falls short. I will eventually look into either a JL sub upgrade or entire speaker upgrade at some point but for now the Harman will have to do...

Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

As a person with years of tinkering with HK Logic 7 systems (mostly in Range Rovers) they do amazing highs and mids with excellent staging. However, the bass always lacks of that some of us are used to. I think its really because of room availability. BMW Logic 7 systems are infamous for having no low end. Fortunatly for all of you its easy as cake to add a subwoofer with a little car audio knowledge which remedies the problem.

Ive built countless car audio systems in my time and I must agree with others in earlier posts, the Logic 7 you guys have in teh SRT (and soon the Summit) is one hell of a bang for the buck. $2g wouldnt get you close to that in aftermarket audio.

Hell, 1/2-2/3's of that money would go into a decent head unit alone and the only one that comes to mind that could keep up with a Logic 7 system (in processing power, mind you) is the Pioneer P99RS and that isnt even a navigational unit!!!

Adding a processor would be kind of moot as the H/k is using logic 7 processing technology. If anything something to only amplify should be ideal. Someone around here may have tried a processor but I don't know of what the outcome will be.

Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

thanks for the reply and suggesting to amplify the system, i am know expert at this but i think that 825 watts is plenty of power??what do you think about changing the front speakers to a better speaker maybe a higher end focal, add a sub jl 12"w7 and jl 900/5 amp,any advice?maybe a waste of money???would it sound that much better???

If you want to out do the H/K system you're going to have to open your wallet. 825watts is more than enough. Most people misconstrue what true wattage power really is. Chances are your system will never even see 800+ watts.

As for speakers. If I'm not mistaken their midrange and rear surrounds (and center) are specialty speakers. Parts Express might have something for you. They do not require a crazy power rating to do their job. Logic 7 uses them for ambience if anything. Granted, I'm only familiar with the systems in Range Rovers but they are likely the same.

As for tweeters and mid woofers, companies like the following can make your system do well.

DLS
Rainbow
Image Dynamics
Hertz (my new fav)
Dynaudio
Model
Focal

Amplifiers are a whole other level. Look into a BitOne.

However, I've said this time and time again, the HK in these Jeeps are bar none when it comes to price vs value. You'll spend almost three times in aftermarket to match it.

You'd likely be happy with a sub and amp upgrade to start.

Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

I've read this whole thread over and over. My question is, taking the base Alpine system that comes stock on the 2014 SRT's, for $2k, can you get better output/clarity aftermarket? As someone stated, would replacing the Alpine speakers and adding some quality subs outperform the 19 speaker HK system?

yes but all told you would probably paying more than $2k for a "decent" complete system. A quality amp and sub would probably cost you $1k alone...

Re: SRT/Harman Audio - anyone else here unimpressed?

That's a good point. From what I can tell, the only MAJOR drawback is a lack of bass output at higher levels?
