I can't believe there won't be any drone with that. I had put flowmasters mufflers on mine that were pretty much a straight pipe. Did not like the sound when the MDS kicked in on the interstate. Could make you kinda nuts after a while. I'm happy with the Borla.
They are excellent! The MDS noise is, if you can believe it, maybe less than factory. There is plenty of sound putting around town to know something is done, and when you get on it, the thing sounds soooo good. It finally sounds like a full fledged V8, and the new Jeep is so sound deadened there isn't an ounce of drone.
The hardest part of the install was the damn exhaust hangars, they are rediculous. Just know that your factory exhaust is going nowhere unless you spend an hour and your forearm strength to get them off...
Big suggestions for a do-it-yourselfer: a sawzall (I used the chain cutter and it took forever...), a flashlight (exhaust hangars are up in the bumper, behind the huge mufflers), some spray lubricant, and try your best to have access to a lift (had one and it helped a lot).
The last part, as I ran out of time, is to align them. The kit is very manageable, and it will only take a bit of maneuvering to get it right.:thumbsup:
Ok back after a couple hundred miles. At every highway speed up to 90 the mds mode is less pronounced than factory, don't ask me how. Man this jeep sounds mean at wot! Still loving them.
Pretty sure 5.7 has 2.5" and 6.4 has 2.75". I would've gone to the exhaust shop and had them replaced with pipe for less but I am in Germany. Go see what a muffler shop charges, and you will be good to go.
Thanks. Nope I have them open full time. I hated that "hand over the exhaust" sound; the fluttering. It didn't sound good at all. Look up any ATAK install or resonator delete video and it will be evident right away. The MDS is slightly louder, but so is the entire exhaust, and it's nothing the radio can't over-power while on long trips. Just driving around though is so much more enjoyable. I also wanted to test the myth of lost MPGs, CELs, and crap low-end due to the lack of the "back-pressure" these create.
Honestly, I think they were to quiet the whole exhaust system, not just MDS...
So I'm thinking about getting an exhaust set-up like this on my 2012 SRT. On a 1-10 scale how would you rate the STOCK sound at IDLE vs. your mod?
Also do you think I should just go to my local exhaust shop and see if they can do this set-up and just delete the resonator? To me it seems like it'd be cheaper..
You see the video two posts up right? That's as accurate as it gets. Stock the SRT is very quiet. Now I have a nice, deep exhaust with the V8 tone this Jeep deserves. On a 1-10, factory gets a 3. Hardly any tone and it sounds muffled because of the valves. Now this setup with no resonators, and the valves sprung open, I give it a solid 10. Obviously my opinion, but at least it sounds like the mean vehicle it should.
Now question 2. Yes, absolutely go to your muffler shop it will be cheaper. I am no where near a muffler shop that will perform modifications to increase exhaust output. The bypass kit was my only option.
How do you go about keeping the valves open in the exhaust? Does that do anything bad or good keeping them open? I don't know really what they're for...
I'm heading down to the exhaust shop today or tomorrow so we'l see what they want to do for the $$$. Thanks for your input.
There are knobs to rotate the valves open by hand. Once you open them with it idling, it will become immediately apparent what it does for the exhaust note, which is a great part. Nothing bad I notice... 0-60 in 4.5 sec the other day, with all 4 spinning, so no loss in power. Nothing bad happened at all.
You can get them to stay open by rotating like previously stated, then moving the end of the spring two positions. If it doesn't stay open the first time, move the spring end back and go two positions in the other direction. You can do all of this by hand, no tools required. It is also reversible if the urge so suits.
