Re: HellCat or Whipple?

Tuning is ok as far as the engine goes. There is nothing you can do as far as tuning for the transmission currently.

As others have pointed out, your price gap between trade and MSRP of the HC is going to be greater than your hypothetical.

If you do go the FI modded route, by all means forge the bottom end. From my experience I would say do the valvetrain as well. Reasonable estimate is going to be 15-20k - of course it can wiggle either way depending on what you do yourself/what you have others do/what 'others' you choose to use. If you do that, your engine is set up for more power than the HC will make. The transmission is going to be a question depending on how hard you push it and how much power you ultimately end up at.

Easy decision in my mind. This pistons in these SRT's are as brittle as glass (not forged) and you run the risk of breaking ring lands with boost. Even with a spot on tune I still wouldn't risk it.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

You'll get $40k for trade in.
According to my 3 dealers here the Hellcat is going to be priced above $100k.

Assuming you bought your 14 new then you're already looking at taking a $30k hit + a $35k price hike for a total of $65k difference in ownership.

Then factor in the extreme depreciation of a $100k car and you're looking at another $30-$40k hit when you decide to sell it and you're now at over $100k in pure loss.

I'd say Whipple the 14 if you love the truck you're in and save yourself quite a bit of money. It should always hang around the high $30's mark used regardless of mileage on it so you wouldn't ever really "lose" on it.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

Element, you're opinion seems to be the general consensus. The built Whipple route seems to the economical choice - especially it would be my keeper.

The only hang up is that there are a few that don't seem to think the tuning is not cut and dried (different levels of success). I've seen no unqualified success/recommendations. I am still not convinced that the modules can be fully "tuned". I don't want intermittent or unsolvable problems.

I've had a previous modified 4Runner with a SC that required a piggyback computer. I got tired of intermittent problems popping up at inopportune times. I'm wary of perpetual headaches. I wish there was a "go to" tuner out there.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

I would put the MM Drop-In Pistons and push the boost to it with the whipple. If you can do the work yourself you are looking at under $9K plus tuning. Easy decision IMO.
