HellCat or Whipple?

I've got a 2014 and I am intrigued with the 2018 GC HellCat (to be released in June 2017?). But I was wondering which would be cheaper in the long run - the HellCat or a Whippled 6.4.

I am assuming when released (for argument's sake) the HellCat will have:
- 707 HP
- a powertrain (transmission, transfer case, and differentials) capable of handling the power and torque
- 3 year/ 36k mileage warrantee
- out the door for $85k (humor me)
- my 2014 trade in/sale $50k

Anything I forgot?
Alternatively, if I bought the Whipple kit ($9k), install it myself ($0), how would the following impact the decision ($)?
- tuning for a daily driver $
- is the pcm programmable (i.e. all anciliaries fully functional)?
- upgrading the transmission $
- upgrading the transfer case $
- does the 6.4 lower end need to be upgraded $
- what HP & torque would be expected?
- I've read one horror story (Lankness) are there others?

Coming at it from a different direction I think a bone stock factory high performance vehicle will always hold its value better than a modified hot rod. Long term especially. Plus a warranty can be very attractive.

Hot rodding is a fun hobby but don't expect to get your money back. You have to do it for the love of the hobby and the joy of creating something that is uniquely yours.

I agree! It's not always about a performance upgrade. You will never get your money back from a 'souped up' jeep with xxx horsepower, just because you say so. All you can really show is the receipts for the parts installed. The big question is who installed the parts, did they know what they were doing & the warranty. It may be a cheaper option for you, but for me, I want a tried, tested, and true 707 hp Hellcat that speaks for itself when I cruise down the road! Everyone knows what it is & what it's capable of doing, including me! I am already saving for mine . . .

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

Very good point on a stock factory high performance vehicle being better than a modified as far as resale value.

-the tranny should be fine under 700HP (blackmambadc on instagram is running strong with no tranny upgrades)
-I would go forged internals for sure with the whipple

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

$14-20k do it right on your '14. The HellCat will be closer to $100k than $85k. The big question is how much more power they can handle with mods.

Really depends on how long you want to keep it, how you will use it and how much power you want.

Flip it in a year or two and happy with low 600s to the wheels go HellCat.

More power and an absolute monster, build yours up. Then sell it to me for $55k

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

not to be a debbie downer but your $50k sell/trade would be optimistic today...in a yr, no way...$40k max

IMHO, it comes down to what kind of person are you? When you are out and about and people notice it and ask if it's a Hellcat JGC are the type who "needs" to say, "Uh huh " or are you the type whose chest inflates with pride from your work and says, "I built my own better one "

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

This would be a keeper. I would not be interested in reselling - with either option. So resale is not an issue.

I guess my biggest gap in knowledge is if the 2014 PCM is fully programmable/tunable for the Whipple, has it already been done to the owner's satisfaction, how much $, and who can do it?

I am guessing that I would be in the lower 50% of the posters as far as pushing their rig. I just like the occasional thrill. Does anyone have an idea of "happy" Whipple owners?

It's become clearer that financially a Whipple mod is the more cost effective - including using a forged bottom end and perhaps transfer case. Anyone aware of transfer case failures?

However, reliability is important to me.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

Wait for the Hellcat powered JGC.
The aftermarket is still no-where with the 6.4.
Be prepared for a lot of waiting, heartache and unreliability if you go down this path on a 14/15.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

Waiting for hellcat myself. No way am I modifing my factory warranted Jeep past cai exhuast. Instead of modding, I've been aggressively paying down the note so when the hellcat comes out it'll be less of a shock when I trade in the 15'. Regardless. Anything over 95k for a Jeep will be tough to justify to myself. Maybe at that time the mod game will begin. Can't wait to see what the new HC jeep brings to the table!

I gather you have SC your GC and are not happy with it. Based on some posters, I thought the ECU had been at-least partially cracked (RIPP, Livernois?), altho with some unsatisfied owners.

Can you go into more detail with your experience? Any other owners want to share?

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

I have a maggie on my 14 and a whipple on my 15.
Both have stock motors, both go awesome, 0-62 sub 3.5s.
14 has done 55,000km trouble free, 15 has done 10,000km trouble free.
But seems I am either really lucky or a tuning genius as most s/c WK2's end up...broken!
The hardware is easy, just bolt it up, the tuning however is veeery challenging.
For that reason I would stay away unless you really want an ongoing project
Don't get me wrong, they are sensational s/c, just seems not many can do it successfully.

Re: HellCat or Whipple?

AuS, you say ongoing project.

I've had previous experience installing a SC on my previous 4Runner. It required a piggyback computer because the ECU could not be cracked. The piggyback used software to adjust the input signals to trick the ECU. Theoretically once set up it required no attention (unless you were refined enough to adjust for seasonal impact).

This was a 1996 4Runner and the electronics were less sophisticated. Nowadays multiple control modules with multiple inputs are used which can interact and I suspect make tuning very convoluted.

But when you say an ongoing project - do you mean just refining tuning or do new problems crop up periodically? If so, what are some of the issues you come up against? Did you do your own tuning?

Thanks for sharing.
