Installed my new aFe GT Momentum CAI on 2016 Grand Cherokee SRT today. First thing I did was to drill out the plastic window and replace the plastic retainers with screws to give it a more finished look. Need to make sure the screws did not extend into the interior and damage the air filter. Then I spray painted the entire CAI with Krylon gloss black paint for plastics. This is a combo paint with primer and top coat.

The install was reasonable easy but there are a few issues to contend with. I will use as reference the step number to refer to issues.:
1. Step 15: The hose provided with the aFe kit used to replace the CCV OEM hose is a pain to insert because it is a smaller diameter than the OEM fitting. This was the most difficult part of the install because the hose is too small for the OEM fitting. If aFe had used the same size fitting in the new CAI tube as provided with the Jeep, a new hose would not be necessary and the install would be much easier. I used WD-40 to assist but forcing the tube to the intake manifold part requires great force.
2. Step 26: The temperature sensor harness that is install in the OEM tube has a rubber grommet and will not fit in the machined (step 17) aluminum temp sensor fitting. I purchased a smaller diameter rubber o-ring to accomplish the task.
Here is the finished product.

I just purchased a new SRT Jeep GC and am awaiting delivery. I was wondering what modifications were the best bolt on before I go to a larger displacement motor or just SC it. Did you find this CAI helped your Jeep (hp/tq/mpg)? Did you tune after the install or did you just plug and play?
Thanks !
Adam

Hey Adam, no the CAI did not improve performance on the track (1/4 mile time, trap speed) and have not seen a noticeable improvement in fuel economy. However, Redline R/T made more mods than I and apparently saw improvement in performance.

Thanks for the info. How was the difference in improvement measured? Dyno (corrected for DA), 1/4 mile runs, etc? In regards to the ported throttle body, is it a stock TB that has been ported? If it is, I would think that the throttle valve would be the same and net gain would be minimal. However, if it is a true 85mm including diameter of the throttle valve, I could understand the performance gains. Also, did you tune the Jeep after the addition of all of the upgrades? If yes, who did the tune? That's what holding me back from doing other mods. Thanks for the info Redline R/T.

Here are my findings. On 7/26 I bought a 2015 with 29k. With ½ tank 93 octane and mid 70 temps I was still learning but in track with the lauch control i was seeing 4.9-4.8 after 6 test over 3 days. Bolted on a Atak axle back and went 4.6 with 2 -225 lb guys aboard on a 80 degree day. 1/8 was 8.5 and ¼ was 13.3 seconds Next came the Fastman Throttle body ported to 86 mm and he mills the shaft in ½ that adds 4 mm. The throttle body went on and I went 4.3 back to back. Next night I installed the AFE CAI and went 4.2,, 1/8,,,, 8.2 seconds but it was warmer 80 and very humid. Dew point was 74-76.
I don’t have any dyno runs or track yet. I will say the mid-range and upper rpm the pull is much stronger.
This is not my first rodeo with a hemi. I owned a 2013 durango R/T with corsa cat back, afe, 180 t stat, 86 ported Tb and a hemifever custom 93 tune. Stock it was a 7.9 sec 0-60 by the time I was done it ran low 6’s 6.05 was the best.

Thanks for the excellent summary and progression as you added parts and assessed performance. You definitely provided a great example of more air/fuel in improved exhaust out = horsepower. Did you also perform a hemifever 93 tune after adding the mods as you did for the Durango?

I thought the addition of a larger TB required a tune? I have a 2015 with an Injen CAI and GT Haus system. Was looking at the AFE to possibly replace my Injen or is this even worth it? But hearing the TB improves performance without a tune is interesting. I just hit 36000 miles and bought an extended warranty so I don't want to do a tune. Plus the 2015's require a pcm swap. Too much effort for performance gain I think.

TB does not need a tune. I'm not doing a tune in my 2015 as well due to the pcm swap. BUT just today the service manager @ my dealership confirmed they would not void part of the warranty by adding the Mopar lowering springs then he went on to say that CAI, chips, tunes they don't care about.

A modified bore tb would never be found...99.9999% sure. They'd have to pull the tb and put calipers on it. They look like completely stock
