My Livernois Whipple build

After a few days of staying out of the garage I feel I can make my thread. It's alive!

I received the boxes from Livernois last week before Thanksgiving:

And the money shot:

60-something pages of instructions. What did I bite off? Instructions provided looked fairly thorough. Some of the pics are of a 12/13, so I wondered if I'd run into any questions... I planned to start of Saturday.

Thanksgiving comes and goes. Luckily, I had a buddy to assist me Saturday and we'd see how far we could get. Started at 8am, finished at 4:30ish. Jeep up in the air, front wheels off. Front bumper/grill off, what a PITA. (I don't see how you are supposed to 'release' the clips that mate the bumper and the fender at the wheel arch. We ended up just pulling them apart and breaking the tab that fits into the upper wheel arch.) Drained the radiator, disconnected all kinds of stuff, got the stock intake off, etc. Got the I/C tank and pump mounted, horns moved, lots of other little things. Busy day and fairly uneventful.

Nothing like having a $65k vehicle in pieces in the garage

Sunday. Started by myself about 9 and started stepping through the instructions again. Buddy came back over for about an hour to assist with getting the manifolds/blower lifted up and installed. Had a big issue with the injectors - no way in hell they were fitting into the manifold as the lower O-rings were entirely too big. We tried flipping the o-rings from top to bottom, still no go. Finally got through this by taking the stock lower o-rings off the stock injectors and using them - fit perfectly. My only guess as to why this occurred is that Whipple uses Siemens injectors, while the Livernois kit uses ID850s - maybe they aren't the same diameter, maybe the manifold I received wasn't finished with the same bore, no real idea but we got through it. Started the process of routing all of the hoses, but ran into some confusion as to the locations. I mark that down to being the first self-installer here and the instructions really being clear. No biggie, I was spent, it was ~8pm and I could just talk to Livernois Monday.

Monday, hitch-hiked to work with a friend and shot several emails back and forth with Livernois. Clarified the hose locations, tech was awesome and wrote up a install guide for the BAP specific to the Jeep. Got home, routed the hoses, filled the radiator and IC tanks. Time to get the bumper back on. Those little clips that wouldn't come off? Yea, I cut the tabs off that go into the upper wheel arches. I don't see how you can get them back in, seems like the upper wheel arch would have to go on AFTER. Once everything was back on, the gaps are the same, so I probably won't worry about it.

Throw the tune on:

Time to start...cranking, cranking, cranking... WTF!! I was sleep deprived, body was aching from 2 full days in the garage, it's midnight. Nope, not going out like that.

It wouldn't even try to fire - can only be 2 things, electrical or fuel. Released the fuel feed, no gas. Ok, so the pump isn't running. BAP, let's see, it's inline, maybe I got the wires backwards (hard to tell which side of is running towards the fuel pump. 5 minutes to get the rear seat unbolted and back out of the way, flip the wires, try again. Vroom vroom (video above).

All in all, it's certainly a big project. Not as much as dropping the motor out of my Camaro and putting a new one in, but pretty damned close. I ended up with a couple of new tools. 90* air drill (for pinning the crank). New set of Allen wrenches. New drain pain. And this little gem:

Not sure why I never picked one of these up before, but it sure works better than pliers!

More to come...

Re: My Livernois Whipple build

So, what's left?

- I need to clean up the engine bay a bit - i.e. - get a little cleaner with the hose routing and zip ties.
- Tie my catch-can back in, currently I just left it out of the loop
- Get the rest of the air out of the radiator. Not sure if there is a trick to this or not to make it quicker...
- Need to get some plastic rivets for the bumper/wheel arch. I drilled out the originals and replaced them with push versions that aren't tight enough.
- Need to write up an email back to Livernois with my install notes to assist future people

And, how does it drive? AWESOME! So much more torque at light-to-mid throttle. At 2100ish RPMs, it tries to take off on you even at light throttle positions. Pulls from 40-80 are quick! I've only took off from a dig once and the traction control went nuts from the tire spin through first and second. Haven't had much chance to do anything else, but will update this thread with vids as I do.

Glad I pulled the trigger on this. Can't wait to drive it more

Awesome work man. What is that last tool? Looks like it would be very handy in tight spaces.

Re: My Livernois Whipple build

Curious if you've had any tuning issues like others who have installed tunes? Any plans to dyno soon?

Re: My Livernois Whipple build

No issues with the tune that I've noticed thus far... The tuning side of the equation was the reason I went with Livernois - they have been around the block and have a good reputation. Started right up (once it had fuel), runs smooth, idles at 700 rpms, haven't heard any pinging or detonation... I haven't really thought about a dyno pull, not sure if I will or not. If I do I'll certainly post the results.

Yeah,...that's the way to go.
I bet it pulls like a freight train now and must be super quick! Do you have that "whine" as well?
