SRT Diesel Reponse from Ralph Gilles

Thought this may be of interest to some on the forums...Someone tweeted Ralph Gilles @RalphGilles a question about an SRT diesel and he responded "Popular question lately.+20% mpg. Would a 5k price & a little less performance be acceptable?"

Diesel dose stink. I wouldn't want it for a car or a SUV. I have a Cummins but it serves a purpose.

Audi did make some noise with their monstrous Q7s, with V10 and V12 Turbo-diesel engines... Torque monsters to say the least, but I'd still choose gasoline over diesel anytime!

And to answer to Ralph: yes to +20%MPG, a big resounding NO to less performance...

You guys need to watch some oil burners race...I've seen a chipped Cummins do a 9.9 quarter mile in a 4wd Ram. Then turn around and tow the $45,000 purpose built step car (9 second car) home averaging 17mpg...

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Problem is that Diesels are big heavy blocks as a general rule... ALl that torque requires a stiff block, especially when boosted like you are talking. Weight is the enemy of a performance car, no matter how much torque or power you produce.

Regardless of performance potential it's a big no for me. We can get into Formula One racing if you like. As they've reduced the engine cylinders I've lost interest. I don't care about the performance at this level as much as I do the thrill of driving. V8, V10, V12 motors are intoxicating. Diesels, while cool at first in trucks, get annoying after a while. Or look at the Ecoboost V6 in Fords. Great motor, great potential. But no soul. If they make an fast explorer and it's quicker I would never jump ship. Look at the Audi S5, they dropped the V8 and went to a TT 6 and sales dropped.
