Hi
Can anyone recommend a good brand of racks that fasten to the rails already on my roof.
MOPAR, THULE, or any other,etc.
I am looking for some strong enough to handle a 17' canoe ( especially the wind resistance not the weight ) or 4' x 8' sheets of plywood, etc.
Thanks
Hi Tony,
Is there any chance you could take a couple of real closeup pictures of the bracket that attaches to the Jeep rail. You mentioned that the bolts are replaced somehow. How does that work?
The bars replace the mounting bolts for the flush bars with studs that the Yakima attaches too. No issues at all carting my 17' Old Town Royalex or 169 Disco. One is 40lbs the other 80lbs.
I use the front and rear straps which ensure the wind doesn't cause stress on the bars by pitching the canoe up. I hook the front strap on the tow hook and rear strap on the receiver chain loop. The keel over kit has nice brackets that hug the gunnel of the boat an eliminate and sway. The synch strap work really well that come with the kit. Very satisfied.
I'll get some pics as I mount it back up this week. There are a few hex screws on each flush mount rail that hold the factory flush rails to the roof. You remove the most forward and rearward ones and replace them with the studs included with the Yakima foot kit. The racks feet slip over these studs and fasten securely with an included nut.
The keel over brackets clamp around the whispbars.
Hi Tony,
The videos were terrific and answered my questions. Its the studs replacing the Jeep's hex bolts that are the key.
I will definitely look at that approach.
Do you think the four studs could be ripped out of the roof by a strong cross wind at 75 mph ( 120 kph )?
No it's mounted nice and firm. Ensure you tie the bow and stern down as that will keep the boat from pitching and stressing the rack. My boat doesn't move at all on the highway. I give it a good shake after tying it down. It's a solid setup.
