2014 Grand Cherokee - Rust on Paint?!

Hey guys,

I've been lurking around this forum for a few months, but this is my first post. You all have been very helpful in the past, so I'm hoping you have some advice for me!

About a month ago, I noticed what looks like rust showing up on the rear end of our 2014 Grand Cherokee. It's all over the backend and on one of the doors.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what it is?? It seems totally insane that a car would begin to rust after only a year.

Thanks!

wow.. that looks nasty.... I have the same problem on my limited too... Just 2 month old though.... But its not rust and they r just tiny dots.... i tried to take pic but it didnt come well... sorry for that

I noticed it few weeks before after the first car wash.... But its coming off from the body after effort-full cleaning.... am sure its not rust, on my vehicle. I took delivery as soon as the vehicle came from another dealership. They didn't get a chance to wash or even polish it.... Am going back to the dealer on June to do some of my protection package including rust protection.... I will be asking them to clear it of and to do a nice and clean polishing.... I hope that will work...

Just try to clean a small part may be rubbing with a micro fiber cloth... and if its not coming out, i would suggest you to take it to the dealership. It should cover under your warranty....

It's most likely just what is commonly known as "rail dust". I've seen it on plastic painted parts too. Most noticeable when the vehicle is painted white. It's created when driving in traffic and vehicles hit the brakes causing their iron brake rotors to wear down and shower microscopic particles of iron onto your shiny new paint. These quickly oxidize to form unsightly rust spots. There are products such as "iron-x" which are specifically made for this. Use a clay bar after iron-x and your new ride will look pristine once again. This is not a warranty issue. You can find lots of info in the detailing section on this. Hope this helps.

This has happened to me on previous white vehicles. I believe it is either rail dust, brake dust or tar deposits that get embedded into the clear coat. I was able to get them out with a clay bar. Good luck!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Rust on Paint?!

I guess no one has cleaned their own cars in the past or they never had light colored cars. If you live where it snows salt combined with who knows what other kinds of chemicals are used to speed up the process of melting.
This past year they used beet juice in the Chicagoland area. These minerals and chemicals are creating what you think is rust on your paint.

Your options are to either clay bar the car for 6 hours or to pick up a iron remover such as Iron-X. Use the Iron-X first, then clay bar, then wax and seal. Car will be good as new.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Rust on Paint?!

I use Iron X Snow Soap as a lubricant for claying. So I clay and remove iron particles in one swoop. I then wash, polish and wax.

I had the same thing on my white limited, but it was from being on the barge and all the salt.

Ya it's just tar from the roads and brake dust. If you pick a small spec and rub it with your finger it will come off. Unfortunately you can't do that with rust!

Not sure what he is talking about but the rust spots came off easy with a clay bar.
