2014 Hardwire Radar Detector

Has anyone tried to hardwire a radar detector in their 2014 yet? I want to tap power from the mirror for my V1. It looks like the mirror is different in the 2014, at least on the Overland, so I dunno if the DIYs here will apply. I haven't tried yet but probably will next weekend, it is still damn cold here in Chicago.

Thanks

Suction cup mount, works fine in my other car. I ordered an additional one so I can easily swap between cars without having to redo the suction cup part each time. I want to place it just left of the mirror up at the top of the glass.

I'll poke around with it next weekend, maybe even create the DIY unless someone (hopefully) beats me to it.

I went through the mirror on my M3 and the cable is hardly noticeable. I'll poke around and see what I can do.

You brought up old memories, I had a 335 before trading it for my M3. Did lots of tuning to that one before I got rid of it, ran a 12.8 quarter mile with 19" street tires. Spent way too much time on e90post...

Does everyone here drive a 3 series as well ??? LOL

The V1 has bailed me out many times, already paid for itself easily. A good cop can beat a radar detector in some cases but most are too lazy to do it.

I'll give it a try next weekend and report back to you guys.

The V1 has also saved me quite a few times. I don't expect it to really save me if I'm the only car on a long straight road. But the V1 has picked up a signal around a bend and allowed me the time to slow down before the cop actually gets a visual on me. It obviously does it's best when other cars are on the road and the cop is checking speeds on cars ahead of you.

I traded an E46 M3 for the JGC :)

I used this to tap in to the rearview mirror. I don't believe there were any major changes to the rearview so look for the same wires.

Got it done by tapping the rear view mirror with the invisicord. Really easy to do once you figure out how to put the mirror back on. This was a little different than the DIY that uses the harness in the overhead console. I took some pics and will post my DIY soon.

Please do, thanks!

There's no doubt in my mind that my 9500 has paid for itself. It's obviously great on the highway, but it's alerted me to a number of speed traps locally that I would never had been aware of otherwise. I don't drive crazy fast but I do like to drive a speed that I feel comfortable handling. And usually, that's a *bit* faster than the posted speed limit. :D

So, true story. This morning, I was just driving through a nearby through street, speed limit inexplicably 25 MPH, and my 9500 goes off with a KA band warning. Occassionally, they'll put up one of those stationary detectors showing your speed, but those are always K band. So, I slowed to 25 MPH. Yup, right there was a cop. A car 2 behind me got pulled. It would have been me for sure.

Great write up, thanks! I think I'm going to go with the Mirrortap since it has the integrated V1 connection. I'm wondering why you recommend a 20 inch version of the chord if the unit is being mounted so close to the mirror? Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm thinking 12-15 inches would be plenty. You said it's to tuck the slack up in the headliner. How much excess slack is there with the 20 inch version?

I had the 12" cable but it wasn't long enough to tuck it under the headliner, it ran straight from the V1 across to the mirror. Maybe I wasn't creative enough with running it. I made a longer cable and that worked much better.

Just finished this install, definitely easy with the great write up. 2 notes:

1. If you are using the suction mount the definitely get at least the 15 inch chord. I went with the 20 per the rec and there's a couple of inches of slack, but not too much. You can always tuck away the extra.

2. My entire mirror assembly came off when I pulled up on the trim piece so be prepared for that possibility.

3. I used the mirror tap from blendmount and was confused by the instructions as it appears as if there is no room to insert the prongs into the connector. Well I decided to go ahead and throw caution to the wind and make them fit, aka cramthem into the noted slots per the instructions. it isn't pretty, but they barely went in. So... Since its not clear in the write up, just cram those suckers in there because while it looks impossible, that actually is what you are supposed to do.

Yes, the mirror and two trim pieces can easily come off all together. You can try to get them off individually, but if it all comes off together it's no big deal.

Also if you use the Invisicord micro cable you won't have trouble putting them into the slots as the cable has very narrow connectors which fit nice and snug into the connector, no forcing necessary - just the right amount of resistance.
