A More Sensible Rear Fog Light Solution

So I'll start this off but saying i drew my inspiration for this project solely from seeing how ridiculously expensive the "go to" option for rear fogs was. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I did some homework and came up with my own set up for under $50. For everything.

Is it as clean or sexy as the plug and play option? Definitely not. Is it cheap and look exactly the same? You bet. And most importantly, does it work? Uh, yup.

So if you're looking up do this simple mod and save yourself $250-$300, this is how I did it. I used the following parts:
1) uxcell 2 Pcs T20 7440 LED Bulb Brake Signal Light Socket Harness Wire Ash Blue (Amazon)
2) LUYED 2 x 800 Lumens 7440 33-EX Chipsets (Amazon)
3) 18 gauge wire & weatherproof butt connectors (Amazon)
4) Rear Fog Light Housings ordered from eBay: m.ebay.com/itm/142027350178?_mwBanner=1

Everything else I got from Amazon besides the housing. I got that from eBay and attached the link above. I had to super glue the harness to the light housing. Put some automotive sealant around the super glue to weather proof it.

If you want it to blink with the turn signal, get a 7443 harness and a bulb compatible with that. If you want it to light up as a running light like mine, get the 7440. That only has a positive and negative connection, while the 7443 has those as a third wire to tap into the brake light directly. I get no "bulb out" message with my configuration and because it's tapping an LED source, I don't need a resistor.

I tapped and soldered directly into the middle adapter in the rear light housing here: Wire Electrical wiring Cable Technology Auto part
.

I fed my harness in through the opening like this and pulled it all the way up: Tire Automotive tire Automotive exterior Bumper Vehicle door

These are what my finished harness/ housing combo looked like: Wire Cable Gas Metal

And this is what the day time and night time lighting looks like.

Land vehicle Vehicle Car Sport utility vehicle Vehicle registration plate

I'm incredibly happy with this mod and even happier with how much more sensibly priced this is. PM me with any questions - I'd help someone out in a heart beat if it keeps them from dropping that kind of money.

Very nice! I got my harness from Jeep_addicted for about 1/10th the price of the other guy. Kinda silly to pay crazy money for a harness and led bulbs.

Awesome setup.

To be clear, you set this up to run strictly as rear foglights, correct? I'm looking to enable the rear fogs as just that - rear fogs, not turn signals. I also do not feel like spending $300 on something so simple. How do you activate them if they are just fogs - do they turn on when you put your front fog lights on or do you have a separate switch? I was thinking of using mine on a separate switch because 99% of the time, my fogs are on with my headlights.

Negative. I have them tapped into he rear LED lights that surround the light housing. If you take off the lights and look at the back of the housing, it's the middle harness that I soldered into.

So they act as rear lights if anything, but not brake or blinker lights.

They need to be turned off or youll look that that guy driving down the highway resting his foot on brake slowing traffic down. Unfortunately it's also illegal in some states.

Rear fog lamps is a European thing

Eh, it's not every state. Most states I've seen have it where as long as those rear lights are lower than your factory brake lights and are amber/red it's ok.

I'm not sure if anyone saw this but Jeep addicted asked everyone interested to send him a PM, not fill the thread asking for a set.

If you haven't sent a PM then that might be why he hasn't got back to you.
