So I'll start this off but saying i drew my inspiration for this project solely from seeing how ridiculously expensive the "go to" option for rear fogs was. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I did some homework and came up with my own set up for under $50. For everything.
Is it as clean or sexy as the plug and play option? Definitely not. Is it cheap and look exactly the same? You bet. And most importantly, does it work? Uh, yup.
So if you're looking up do this simple mod and save yourself $250-$300, this is how I did it. I used the following parts:
1) uxcell 2 Pcs T20 7440 LED Bulb Brake Signal Light Socket Harness Wire Ash Blue (Amazon)
2) LUYED 2 x 800 Lumens 7440 33-EX Chipsets (Amazon)
3) 18 gauge wire & weatherproof butt connectors (Amazon)
4) Rear Fog Light Housings ordered from eBay: m.ebay.com/itm/142027350178?_mwBanner=1
Everything else I got from Amazon besides the housing. I got that from eBay and attached the link above. I had to super glue the harness to the light housing. Put some automotive sealant around the super glue to weather proof it.
If you want it to blink with the turn signal, get a 7443 harness and a bulb compatible with that. If you want it to light up as a running light like mine, get the 7440. That only has a positive and negative connection, while the 7443 has those as a third wire to tap into the brake light directly. I get no "bulb out" message with my configuration and because it's tapping an LED source, I don't need a resistor.
I tapped and soldered directly into the middle adapter in the rear light housing here: .
I fed my harness in through the opening like this and pulled it all the way up:
These are what my finished harness/ housing combo looked like:
And this is what the day time and night time lighting looks like.
I'm incredibly happy with this mod and even happier with how much more sensibly priced this is. PM me with any questions - I'd help someone out in a heart beat if it keeps them from dropping that kind of money.
