Anybody tried the Rocky Road Roof Rack???

I am in need of a roof rack for my new wk2 and am liking the look of the rocky road setup. Has anyone out there tried it out yet? I am concerned about the wind noise as I will leave the rack permanently attached. Also, I have heard many complaints about the spread on the factory bars. Does the Rocky Road setup allow for a little more spread? I am very leery about buying it since their return policy is for in store credit only. Thanks for the help!

Re: Anybody tried the Rocky Road Roof Rack???

I like the look of the Rocky Road rack as well, but from the pics, it doesn't look like the bar spread is any greater than the factory rack (about 28.5") I really would like a spread closer to 48" for carrying a canoe or sea kayak. At the moment the only thing available with that spread is the Rack Attack custom rail system with Yakima or Thule crossbars. (Moose has a thread with pics on installing one with Yakima bars.) Unfortunately, it's quite expensive. The Rocky Road system fits the stock WK2 roof rails, and it looks to me like they could lengthen their rails (still using the factory rails) to accommodate a greater crossbar spread. Their prices seem reasonable, and this would certainly be a lot cheaper way to go than the Rack Attack custom rail system. Contact Rocky Road and see if they would be willing to lengthen their rails (for a price, of course). Then let us all know what you find out.
Good luck!

Snapped a few pics for you - it is no wider than the factory bars, but much sturdier. It uses the factory bolt holes to mount.

Hey J, I am looking at the Rocky Road website and was wondering which kit your ordered? Do you have the adventure rack or just the steel rails + cross bar? IMO this is the obvious choice for rails since it costs less than getting thule mounted up there and is much sturdier. Looks sick too.
Thanks!

Mine is just the Rails and Cross bars - not the whole rack.

Re: Anybody tried the Rocky Road Roof Rack???

jcarone, what's the maximum front to rear spread on your crossbars? It looks like you might be able to get close to a 36" spread, which would be an improvement over the factory 28-29" spread.
