Anyone painted their rear tailgate "applique"?

Just wondering if anyone has done this yet. I found a place in L.A. that had done this and thought it looked really spiffy with the Jeep emblem shaved and smoothed down.

My guess is this is sort of what would need to be done - someone jump in here if im wrong or youve done it successfully a different way

1. Once the piece is off, use a product called to get the chrome off.
2. Use fiberglass or bondo/something similar to fill in the crevices around the Jeep emblem.
3. Use a dremel and sand the emblem down close to being level then hand sand the rest so you dont over do it.
4. More bondo/fiberglass
5. More hand sanding
6. Prime and paint yourself or take to a body shop so it will match better.

This sound about right? I bought a used tailgate piece for $40 on ebay, so Im going to try and start working with that over the weeknd if I get a chance.

Thanks all!

That spray will not take the chrome off. I have tried it before. My method for removing chrome was muratic acid and bleach on some trim pieces. Took a few days soaking in this stuff to get it off.

Re: Anyone painted their rear tailgate "applique"?

I tried the Super Cleen method and after about 18-20 hrs in the bath, i was BARELY seeing little etched marks in the chrome where it was beginning to break up. So today I decided to try the acid method (was a little apprehensive because I mean it's ACID afterall).

So Ill post some updates in the next couple of days if this seems to work a bit better.

Oh, forgot FIRST i tried soaking in straight bleach for about a day and was beginning to see black gunk in the bleach and small tiny little leisions on the surface, but again seemed like a VERY slow-go.

Hoping the acid does the trick.

I had my rear brow painted like the 14+ GC's by my buddies shop. They bead blasted all the chrome before paint. They also painted my mirror caps and door handles.

Very cool, I definitely think this looks way better to paint match the body over stock. Im going to be going one step further and sanding off the jeep emblem, but I actually REALLY dig the way yours looks, PipesTA!

Thanks, it turned out real nice. The all chrome brow looks real cheap to me. Good luck with the sanding and filling.

Re: Anyone painted their rear tailgate "applique"?

I'm probably going to get totally berated for this BUT I figured for those interested in doing the shaved look, Ive found a few ways NOT to do things and after Im nearing the end, Ive sort of figured out how Id do it if I had to do it over again.

Saturday, I decided to quit screwing around with the acid bath which was not doing much. I ended up dremeling the CRAP out of about 15 little sanding disks and gouging the hell out of the thing (this is an ebay piece - the original is still on my truck). I've used plaster, bondo, welded, ground etc so I knew I could just bondo it up, sand it down and Id be ok.

To an extent I was right but Im now having to do a TON of eyeballing and liiiiiiiiight hand sanding. Its coming along, but its taking some time. Ill include a few pics here.

If I had to do the whole thing all over again, this is the way Id do it to minimize work, reshaping, materials used and sanity.

1. Use a DA sander and sand down the jeep emblem until you start scuffing the adjacent chrome.
2. Bondo in the crevices around the Jeep emblem and sand down smooth.
3. Using the DA sander with light to no pressure (and I used 80 grit for the majority of this) sand the chrome down until you start seeing the bare white plastic.
4. Continue hand sanding around the corners so as to not distort them.

This sounds pretty simple but it took me two days of doing it wrong to figure out a better way.

Re: Anyone painted their rear tailgate "applique"?

Couple more pics

Oh and the line that you can see in one of these pics was from me hand sanding that back in after the bondo got away from me. Still smoothing it down and working it out but its a work in progress. Let me know what you guys think.
