Attention: Everyone who hates the chrome window trim...

I stumbled across this article on Jalopnik today:

The problem with murdered out special editions

To me, it isn't a huge issue, especially on my Billet Altitude. (it blends with the silver) I understand it bothers others though. As an engineer, it always aggravated me that people just assumed they forgot about it for the trim level. Automobiles are very complex systems with hundreds of OCD detail driven engineers (ice crazies) who stress every detail; no way was it an oversight.

So why the chrome? Look no further than the first comment on the article:

my time to shine!!! I worked for *INSERT OEM HERE* as a release engineer for weatherstrips, and DLO’s those chrome strips around the windows are not so easy to change color, they aren’t like a bumper, or insert on the side of the car. they are almost always stainless steel or aluminum usually stretch-bent or stamped. and due to design constraints are integral to the function of the sealing system. sometimes having weatherstrip components designed into them.

with that you get limitations, to have both a chrome and black version can get dicy. especially on fully stamped doors like the GMC and GC. the Cherokee on the other hand has frame under glass doors, which makes the sealing system more forgiving to accommodate aesthetics.

I’ve had to present cost and risk plans for these very proposals on adding a murdered out version, and nobody wants to hear it, one one program I was working on it added $60 per car $60 per car on something they sell > 200,000 gets expensive quick. the tooling isnt cheap either.

so please, stop demanding these silly looking uber-aggressive cars, and save an engineer’s life
All I wanted to do was provide an explanation for the "forgotten" trim, I guess all the complaints and assumptions it was just laziness got to me over the years...

The guy sounded half-intelligent until his last comment.

"so please, stop demanding these silly looking uber-aggressive cars, and save an engineer’s life "

Without public demand of certain styles and trends he would be out of a job and we'd all be driving VW bugs.
Oh wait ..didn't he state "worked for" ...past tense.

I think it was an engineer's attempt at humor, many times they/we swing and miss...

Re: Attention: Everyone who hates the chrome window trim...

I certainly don't "hate" the chrome trim. Infact I find it funny so many guys on this forum get so worked up about the chrome. If I want it black some day i'll get it wrapped end of story no big deal :-)

Also, I don't think I really buy this guys argument. They can make something any color they want to make it. Cars have been coming with different finish window trims for decades. Yeah I would imagine its gonna cost more money to have additional work done to finish a product, but they now are offering black trim on multiple bew Grand Cherokee models...cant be that huge of a deal!

his argument is basically, "some people want pink cars. we can't make pink cars."

well, you could, but it costs money. not news.

the fact that me (and i assume thousands of others) have asked for this specific change means maybe spend $60/vehicle and offer it. i know i spent $300+ to have it "dipped".

I read it more like, yes we could make chartreuse colored trim, but the bean counters won't allow it because it would add 60 cents to each vehicle's cost just to have the option on the sales sheets.

Also don't buy it. I'm certain that engineer has a valid point on the process, but to consider that the reason why the trim is not blacked out is a stretch. It might just be that the demand is not there, rather than the bean counters not wanting to do it.

If there is a valid ROI, it doesn't matter what the tooling and engineering costs are.

I get his point but on a $50,000.00 vehicle, Yes I would pay $60.00 to have the chrome window trim black. I would pay twice that. I think many others would also.

Re: Attention: Everyone who hates the chrome window trim...

This sort of thing happens all the time with every product. The manufacturers always fail to understand that some people will gladly pay more for certain options. Yet, they always cater to the people that want it cheaper.

It's my pet peeve of cell phones. It costs less than $10 wholesale to go from 32GB of internal memory to 64GB, yet you see so many phones out there offering 32GB as the max trying to hit that $399 price point. The bean counters don't understand that they could charge $429 for double the memory and end up with roughly an extra $20 profit per phone that people upgrade on - which people totally would based on the value they feel they're getting.

Instead, they either don't offer the option, or make it $100 more, meaning 80% of the people won't bother. That means the math fails to work in favor with profit margins because the extra $80 for around 20% of your upgrade customers ends up being less than $20 spread over a much greater pool.

Short sighted thinking is why we can't get quality goods and services. Companies listen to stock holders who only care about short term profits verses long term revenue. When that goes away, the only thing left to shave is employees when the market is down and sales go through a slow patch.

Well, I'm all for "network tv," NetworkTV ! And I share your thoughts and would like to add that those stock (share) holders are the "Fat Kats" with most of the $$$$ and they "control" the majority of Decision making in those smokeless-filled boardrooms ! Plus, the dudes on the exchange floors (and thus the Fat Kats), well, they usually WIN ($$$) wether the "markets" rise or fall. It's all in the "game of chance" - real world gambling, if you will !
I've been dableing in mutual funds for years and it just amazes (more like angers) me how LOOONG it takes me to earn back what I've lost in so short a time. While (as I said) these guys/gals at the exchanges place their bets and Usually Win even when "we" loose ! BUT, in the long term, small gains for me are still better than no gains (or loses even in cost of living rises). I'm NOT paying any big broker managers boat payments and manage my own financials - it's kind of fun, interesting and sometimes nerve racking, but, that's life !
