Aux Switches & UHF Radio

G'day all, This is my first post and strangely enough my first Jeep.

To set the scene a small bit of history about me. I've owned several 4x4's over the years, most of which have been Cab/Chassis configurations, mainly for work as I'm a Excavator operator. My last truck was a 2003 GU 4.2TDi Nissan Patrol (Aussies will know what i'm talking about - see below) and a bloody good truck it was.

I'm not getting any younger and now I spend more time in an office than in the field, so a few creature comforts are very much appreciated, which is why I decided to upgrade my vehicle.

So in Feb of this year i bought a GC Laredo (3lt v6 Diesel) and am now contemplating modifications and add-ons.

I've sourced the bar work I want for the front of the vehicle and am currently narrowing down a LED light bar. The Patrol had numerous spots on the Dash & center console to position Auxiliary switches and they looked as though they belonged in the vehicle. The Laredo however is somewhat lacking in switch blanks or positions open to the installation of Auxiliary switches.

Are there any aftermarket manufacturers that make switches that would look as though they were OEM if fitted into the Laredo. Or conversely is there way of utilizing the unused switch areas (Steering wheel, bottom of center dash console) so i can fit several control (On/Off) switches for the Light bar for example.

While I'm asking, is there anyone here who has fitted a UHF Radio and if so where did they position it. I'm currently looking at a GME unit with a multi-function Mic and the main unit hidden somewhere in the vehicle.

Any ideas regarding any of my ranting would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, the switch arrangements in the JGC are not "traditional switches". Rather, they are a switch assembly that interfaces with the vehicles computer bus, not directly to the devices and functions they control. The assemblies are "sealed" and have a circuit board inside that may interfere with installing an aftermarket switch in that position. The positions are all part of a full assembly and there are different assemblies based on what options are on the JGC, itself. I believe someone awhile back managed to modify and assembly to get an aftermarket switch in an unused "blank" position, but I couldn't find the thread today for some reason...

Look towards the manufacture spod for possible solution. The produce a very trick digital touchscreen switch bank that is virtually limitless in its switching ability. Pricey, even by US standards, but it is a option.

You could also ring up the blokes at uneek 4x4 or chief products - they have kitted out a multitude of Jeeps similar to yours. They may even have options that none of us are aware of.

Or lastly - try the geniuses at ARB. I know they've fitted out at least two Grands Cherokees with spotty's. Maybe they could shed some light on the subject.
