Bloody-ing tail-light mod?

I'm about a month in to my new GC Limited, Anniversary trim. I've a question about the tail-light lens. The way our garage is there's only a couple of feet between the back of the jeep and the wall, so if I get something out of the back I'm likely to brush the back of the vehicle on the way by. With the hatch open the tail light lens sticks out the farthest of everything but the bumper and is the right height to catch my forearm. That lens edge is as sharp as a well-squared wood-scraper. First time it took about 1 square inch of skin off to the meat (three weeks later and it's still a divot). Gonna be one ugly scar added to the collection. Just happened again the other day but this time only about 1" of tan disappeared. I can't be the first owner with this issue.

This happens to my wife and she won't be amused.

Options so far:
1. fine-sand the sharp edge off. Problem is that will leave a white edge so then I'll have to spend time working through polish steps to get a good look back. Probably a couple hours of work with a Dremel and some buffing wheels from the rock-polishing kit.

2. get some slip-on door edge trim and cut to fit. The vertical line of the flat black trim will fit with the Anniversary package "dull bronze" on granite and other black trim.

3. clear silicone ... build a bead on the inside of the sharp edge and a little on the bit facing the open hatch. I'm not sure how long that will adhere.

Any other thoughts or solutions tried and loved?

Thanks.

Don't park the car in he garage if it doesn't fit since you walk past it constantly. Or don't walk behind it.

Not the cars fault.

I think you're the only owner with this issue.

Re: Bloody-ing tail-light mod?

Ha ha. Yeah, gotta say that's the first I've heard of anyone doing that.

The only solution I can think of though, is to have some pool noodles (or anything similar) in the garage. Since this is only an issue when you're parked in the garage with the hatch up, you can put the noddle along the edge to protect your arm (and the lens). When you leave the house, leave the noodles in the garage.

Funny thing, I cut my elbow with that edge the other day while getting stuff out of the trunk. It is, indeed, sharp.

Sorry to hear that you "found" it.

I don't want to red-neck it so I'm not going to patch it with duct tape. The elegant solution would be grind it down and buff it out, but I had to quit beer and that sounds like a six-pack job. So I think I'm going to try to cut down some slip-on door edge molding and see how a black stripe looks. If it pans out I'll post a pic.

Re: Bloody-ing tail-light mod?

Here are three pics for the solution I picked. I found the 3/8" wide clear door molding at O'Reilly Auto Parts. After cut to length, I removed some material from the inside edge to help the molding contour to the lens. Cleaned the lens up with some warm soap and water, dried completely, and then spent a few minutes holding the molding in place before shutting the hatch.

The molding has its own glue. They recommend don't disturb the molding for 5 days to let the glue set. It's been there a couple of weeks now and it's been bumped a few times, but it seems solid enough.

1 beer job for both sides.
