Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

Anyone here who has applied Lamin-x on your tail lights, did you need to upgrade your bulbs (3157 or 7440) to get enough brake light or turn signal light?

I am wanting to cover my tail lights in charcoal Lamin-x but I'm concerned that my tail lights will no longer be legally bright enough.

Any recommendations on a super bright bulb to counteract the tint?

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

as far as ive noticed, laminx allows light to get out from the tail light but prevents light from coming back in to the reflectors like it normally would be able to (think i saw this on their website). im running gunsmoke and dont notice much difference in light output, just the shading from the tint

Sounds like I have nothing to worry about then, thanks!

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

however, i would try to get advice from someone with the charcoal tint... mine is the medium of the options so it may be a little bit different on yours. also really depends on your location (here in ATL suburbs they get you on window tint all the time-$150 first violation and $500 the second time) but not as much for tails (half the people here dont even use their head/tailights at all)

No. Running the charcoal on mine and lots of light still coming out from stock bulbs

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

I emailed Lamin-X and they were essentially non responsive. I was hoping that they would say that their film would allow the brake light through, but they danced around the question. I guess I'll consult with a local installer.

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

I got you subbie, and thank you. Just wasn't sure if "lots of light" equates to the legal amount of light. Again, I am soliciting opinions from all.

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

Well they've been on mine for 3 years, and I've had plenty of cops behind me at night...and yet to get pulled over

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

your local installer should also be able to tell you about the risk you run with the legal issue. when i was getting windows tinted i was going to match fronts with the factory rear tint (he said the rear is actually illegal in GA) and asked what city i lived in, said i was better off not matching it as i for sure would get pulled over at some point (especially cause i'm 16...) i discussed tail light tint and he said most places in general arent that strict as long as it is noticeable when your tails are on at night and you can see a change in brightness when you use brakes

Re: Bulb upgrade with Lamin-x?

I spoke to a local installer who was listed on the Lamin-X "Installer Locator" page. They indicated that there was no need to increase the brightness of the bulb because enough light would shine through. They admitted that there would be some reduction in overall brightness (naturally) but that a legal amount of light would still shine through.

I'm not really sure what I expected to hear considering that they are in the business of selling this product, but I think I am going to go for it. Thank you to everyone to lent their opinions and experience!
