Calling all roof rack experts

Hey guys I need some solid tech help with cross bars and roof boxes. I need to have storage for two adult snowboards and one child's board. Plus some random backpacks, and boots etc. I really like the selection and size choices of the Thule. And I would guess I wouldn't need the Thule cross bars as well. I am not bias to one brand or another. I DO NOT want the bars to stick out further than the roof rails do. I hate the look when peoples cross bars are like a foot hanging off the roof. I want the cleanest low profile set up I can get, without it hitting the shark fin antenna. Any pics you have would be awesome. Color is not an issue cause it will be painted to match the billet of my Overland.
Thanks to all!!!

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

I like the looks and specs of the Yakima WhispBars. The Rail Bar looks like it will attach to your rails without extending beyond either side (and are easily removable).

In my case, I needed enough length in the bars to accommodate a Yakima Rocket Box and BasketCase together on the roof, which means 58" bars (which extend beyond the rails). I actually ordered the WhispBar Through Bars in 58", then realized when I started putting them on the Jeep that they have to be permanently bolted to the roof.

I didn't like the look of the extended WhispBars on the vehicle full time, so I returned them and got the RailGrab system, which I can remove when not in use.

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

I have the Thule square bars with the foot pack that they no longer sell. My bars extend slightly past the side rails, but not by much.(I am pretty sure they are 50") I went with the 38" fairing as well so it sits inside the rails. The piece on the passenger side bar is an assist for loading my kayak, otherwise there are just the endcaps.
Sorry the pic is a little blurry.

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

I just received my Thule rack.. Aero bars are at the powder coated now. Sonic xl black box on the way. Will take pics when installed. I have 60" bars and they will extend a little but I need it for my sons boat. I have the rack that attaches to the jams since I have an altitude.

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

That looks great. I really like the size of that box. Think I'm gonna get that size. That has the clam shell attachment correct. You turn the dial on each corner and it wraps around the bar?

I've got rhino rack and am a huge fan. Really sturdy and easy to assemble and remove. Mine are 54" but you can order whatever length you want for the type of configuration you're hoping for. I once saw a good image that broke down length of bars for what you want to haul. I'll see if I can find it again but for mine, I can hold 2 bikes and my Cargo Box 440B with room to spare. I'll post pics tomorrow if you're interested.

Think my post messed up so here's the link again: http://www.orsracksdirect.com/bar-chart.html

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

That didn't take long; see link below for aforementioned size chart. ORS Direct is a great site. I bought my wife's Inno trailer hitch bike rack from them for a great price.

Re: Calling all roof rack experts

I ended up getting the Yakima whispbar flush bars with k624 fit kit. Just received the bars yesterday, and I'll be getting the fit kit today. I'll post pics when I get them installed
