Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

I've utilized 3rd party HID kits before in past halogen lens cars with very good experience. My 2015 Summit already comes with HID, but I don't like the amount of light or the color they produce. Furthermore, a Phillips or Osram D3S replacement would set me back $200. Would a traditional $50 HID kit, like DDM, work with my car without any major changes? If the stock ballast/bulb assembly is removed, I assume any aftermarket HID kit would work. Thoughts? If it's able to be done, I might just swap out the stock HID for a 5K aftermarket HID kit. Maybe even a 55W kit like I had in my 4Runner.

it would be interesting to know the answer to this...but I opted to put the Osram D3 CBI's in mine along with upgrading the fogs to the OPT7 LED's and its MUCH brighter than stock

300$ worth of bulbs but definitely worth the cost in my opinion

here's a pic of my jeep with the new bulbs next to my 2015 durango that has the stock 4300K HIDS along with some Philips H11 bulbs on fog

Re: Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

Sorry but this just makes no sense to me. You want to remove high quality OEM HID components and replace with some cheap HID kit?
Don't cheap out just because you don't wanna spend the 200 bucks for the high quality replacement bulbs. When it comes to stuff like this I say if you're not gonna do it right, don't do it at all.

Re: Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

I bought my 6500K bulbs from Xeon Depot. I bought the cheaper ones for $140.

http://www.xenondepot.com/D3S-HID-Bulb-p/xt-d3s.htm

I had one bulb go out after 9 months but they replaced it right away.

I am not sure how much light output I lost but if I could do it again I would splurge on the Philips bulbs.

I was considering the Philips as well but the osrams put out more light than the 6k Philips ultinons ...I'm happy with the 5k Osram cbi's but I'm probably going to grab a set of the Philips to try on my Durango

I'm very happy with the output on my jeep though

I'd recommend changing the bulbs if you want more light

You would think 35w OEM HID vs. the D3S aftermarket would put out similar light and the only way to get more light is with a 55w kit.

Re: Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

You bought a $55k vehicle and you're trying to put in a crappy, Chinese made HID kit on it?? I don't think any cheap kit is going to give you more light than stock. If you want to change the color, stick with high quality bulbs.

If you want to change the output, you can pull out the projectors and retrofit in some better ones from TheRetrofitSource, but that is going to cost you a lot of dough.

I put some led's in my fogs and felt like they were as bright or put out the same amount of light as my stock halogens. I do want to find some considering want them to color match my led headlights. You say you got great output with the ones you have but yet you think the Phillips are better?

Re: Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

Well i know i lost some output due to me moving to 6500K compared to the stock light output of 4200K.

The reason I think the Philips are better is I bought the X depot brand and I know Philips who have a better manufacturing process and most likely used better hardware.

Re: Can I plug-play replace my Summit HID with aftermarket HID?

Well my second bulb went out. Xenon depot was great and replaced the other bulb. But that being said they only lasted 10 months or so.

The weird thing is I installed the replacement bulb today and it doesn't seem as bright as the other side? Or do you think it's miss aligned ? I took the bulb out twice making sure it was aligned. ( passenger side bulb replacement is a pain when you have big hands)

Anyone have any ideas ?

I just changed the passenger side bulb

Your unfortunate circumstances have made me realize to enjoy what I have and don't replace my stock HID bulbs unless I go with Phillips or OSRAM.
