Canoe tie-down under front bumper??

Has anyone loaded a canoe on their GC ( with cross bars installed )?
If so, where did you attach a tie-down under the front bumper.
Or, did you go with just ropes/straps on the bars and canoe alone?

Thanks
ps: I just purchased cross bar kit from Amazon ($99 plus shipping ) and they are an identical knock-off of the MOPAR kit for $480. Really nice setup but you must change the mounting bolts as their hex head strips easily.

If you have front tow hooks, I'd use those

I have a set of Chief Tow hooks fitted. The kayak gets tied to that and my tow bar in the rear.

Using your tow hooks will lead to rope burns on your paint.

Get some 1 inch wide nylon webbing, cut to 6-9 inches long, fold over and burn a hole through both ends.

Open the hood to find a accessible bolt and install the webbing. Repeat as necessary.

Stow under hood when not in use.

Or you can buy something similar online: http://www.amazon.com/Yakima-8004046.../dp/B003EMAGB4

Hi P. McManus,
Do you happen to have a photo of these straps installed in your GC?

Thanks

I put a set of these under the hood of my 2011 and plan to put them on my new 2015 (just picked it up Monday!!). So simple to install, and you don't have to worry about tying down over the hood. They work awesome for me.

Which bolts did you use for mount points? Any pics of them installed?

Re: Canoe tie-down under front bumper??

I just put them on my 2015 last weekend - takes 10 mins. I'll take a couple pics when I get home.

Re: Canoe tie-down under front bumper??

This is the way that worked best for me. I tried a bolt closer to the front, but found I was pulling the canoe too far forward. Like this, the canoe gets strapped to the cross bars and pulled towards the middle of the Jeep from the front and back, if that makes sense.

Makes sense. I have a couple kayaks I plan to throw on the roof and was originally thinking of just going to the tow hooks but this looks like a better solution. I only used a front tie-down on my old car for longer trips but it's nice to have as a fail-safe.

What do you do in the back? Go to the trailer hitch?

I went to the hitch on my '11. My new Jeep didn't come with a hitch though, so I have to put one on (bummer). I find that the front is far more important, unless you're driving really fast in reverse...

I had to put a hitch on my Jeep after I bought it last year. Negotiated a little better price at the time of purchase (used) but the dealer still squeezed every last dime on it. I was surprised how few I saw without the tow package up here unless I obviously bumped up to the Overland.

Thanks for the advice.
