Canvasback saga

Like many others we wanted a liner for the back. Unlike some, we didn't have an issue with lots of spilled fluids and the like, so we didn't need a rubber version.

We'd had an iron-tough Rear Gear treated canvas liner since 1994 for our prior Grand Cherokee, and it remains in near-new condition to this day. But, alas, Rear Gear folded a few years back, so we ordered a more basic black canvas liner from Canvasback at http://stores.canvasback.com/-strse-...011/Detail.bok

It looks good and fits well, but after several weeks developed a three-inch separation/tear in the middle, and along the grain, that was as clean as a laser cut. Never mind that we'd hardly used it and treated it like a Persian carpet, it separated in what looks more like a defect than from wear or use.

I emailed Canvasback, expressing our disappointment and comparing their product unfavorably to Rear Gear. Result: six days later a replacement appeared at the front door. They also provided a UPS label to return the old one at their expense.

They say tears are most unusual, and given the extremely neat nature of the separation it looks more like a manufacturing defect than failure from wear. Whatever, it has a lifetime warranty and, obviously, superior customer service, so we're pleased.

Re: Canvasback saga

Update: The original liner arrived back at Canvasback. They've inspected it and can find no obvious reason for the neat, clean tear, which apparently is unprecedented. However, they speculate that it was bad fabric, and I would tend to agree.

The tear is just to the side of one of the stainless strips, so they're keeping an eye out to see if this happens again with any of their WK2 customers. So if you have a problem like this, contact Brooks at canvasbackusa@mchsi.com

Otherwise, we've really liked the liner's looks and performance, and are hugely pleased with their customer service.

Re: Canvasback saga

I agree, they are a great company to deal with. I ordered a black liner for my 2011 GC and after about 2 weeks I emailed them asking if it was shipped yet. They replied that it was shipped right after I ordered it and then they proceeded to call the USPS to find out what happened to it.
The final result, we never figured out what happened to the original one they shipped, it is still in USPS limbo but they shipped me another one and I had it in two days. Great company and product, I had one in my Liberty for 4 years and it survived 2 golden retrievers and 4 seasons of duck and bird hunting.

Re: Canvasback saga

I would like to add that their response to emails are very quick and informative. I ordered a black liner (w/add-on sides) for my WK2 and a graphite one for my JK. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow and can't wait to start using it with my boxers!

Your pooches will be happy when the Canvasback arrives -- each one comes with two dog biscuits!

Re: Canvasback saga

Installed my WK2 and JK Canvasbacks this weekend and they perfectly cover the areas they are designed to cover. I really like the add-on side covers for the WK2 and only wish they had those for the JK. One thing I noticed is that the JK version includes a zipper to seal the split liner on the back of the seats while the WK2 does not. I emailed Canvasback about this but it's not a big deal. I use the Canvasbacks under the rubber cargo liners for both cars.

I just received ours yesterday, fitment is spot on :P

Topic is a bit misleading, it's not really a saga if they replaced it that quickly :P

Re: Canvasback saga

I would really appreciate it if i could see some pictures of the black one installed. Some closeups and one of the underside as well would be great.

Re: Canvasback saga

My photo talents are close to zilch, but in black the floor and second-row seat backs look pretty much as before in part because of the aforementioned exacting fit. Differences are you don't see the chrome strips and the texture is canvas, not mouse fur.

In all, the stock look is better, but not by much. It's a wee price to pay for the protection, and I don't see how they could possibly do it any better.

Another point: No need for occasional resetting. It hangs onto the mouse fur tighter than a chigger on a nudist's butt.

Thanks. I think I will get one. We take our dogs to swim in a river and they smell pretty bad afterward.

tighter than a chigger on a nudist's butt?? Lol!! I had to look up what a chigger was but I got your analogy.

Thanks again for your response.
