Car Cover

im trying to buy a car cover for my rig...but im not at all familiar with them. does anyone have any input/suggestions for decent car covers? ive looked at some stuff online and the price range is all over the map. what should i look for in a car cover in terms of material and any other features, and how much can i expect to pay retail (hoping to find it online cheaper). thanks in advance!

Re: Car Cover

I'll be following this thread, raider. I have a formerly garaged '04 WJ that I would like to protect. I saw the same spectrum of options out there. Some of the decision criteria have to do with your climate and possibly with overhanging growth etc. that might drop on the vehicle. And, getting a cover for your WK2 would be a pretty good argument in favor of a sharkfin antenna, IMO.

Ventilation is also a factor. I know on my boat covers it's important that they breathe to prevent funk from growing. Then there's security (tie downs and grommets for a locking cable under the vehicle) if that's an issue where you park. I have been intrigued by the super strong/super light Tyvek material but wonder if I should just go with an old-school canvas cover.

Re: Car Cover

chris, do you know how much a decent car cover should cost? I've seen prices from 20-80+...I don't know if I can justify $80+ just for a multi-layered sheet of polymer for my ride. The primary purpose for me was to just provide a basic layer between it and the elements. Security really isn't too much of an issue either.

Canvas sounds like a good idea, but I'm not too familiar...do they come fitted to the vehicle? Or is it a basic sheet?

Re: Car Cover

Seems like a classic you-get-what-you-pay-for product mix. I've seen them up over $200. You can get covers that are custom fitted to just about every vehicle out there. I did a quick google search and found some online retailers that had some nice stuff but I didn't drill down very far after that first look. My gut feeling is that it would take at least $100 and maybe more to get a durable, fitted cover. Anything cheaper is only going to approximate the general shape of your vehicle, if that. Goes back to what you need it to do. My need is for a basic dust cover that is easily removable. Something I can shove into a storage bag would be ideal. A cheapie Tyvek model in a neutral cover may be good for me.

Re: Car Cover

Breathing is huge. It is possible to cloud your paint with cheap covers that do not allow moisture to escape. Do not skimp on this item.

Many years ago when I bought my 1988 BMW M5 (still have it!) I researched this issue. I live in Phoenix and the M5 only came in black. I'd had an earlier car cover stolen right off the previous car, so one thing I knew I needed was grommets so I could run a locking strap under the car (when parking in risky areas.)

Unfortunately, I am sneaking onto the forum here from work, so I'll have to follow up with the brand that I settled on a bit later.

Re: Car Cover

I have a Covercraft NOAH on my Camaro. I also live in Phoenix and am very particular about taking extreme care of my paint. This cover is great for ultraviolet light and also breathes extremely well. It is custom fit to your vehicle with grommets for a lock. Be prepared though, it is going to be above $200 for the WK2. I paid around $220 for the Camaro. Small investment for a $30k to $40k vehicle if it has to sit outside.
It is worth every penny. I have had it a year and a half and it is holding up well.
Check out www.autoanything.com. If you sign up for their mailing list you will get a 10% coupon I believe. I ordered from them and they were great to do business with.

Re: Car Cover

If your going to store the car indoors get a cotton cover it is less likely to scratch the paint and it will ventilate. I have used one for years on my corvette no problems.

If outdoors thats another ball game, and I will let someone with more expierence comment.

Re: Car Cover

I got one from griotsgarage.com not while ago, well made however for my G37 not for GC. I also saw some in Costco less expensive.
